Flyctory.com Cons

  • Some weaker songs

Her breakthrough single has more than 240 million streams on Spotify only – Megan Moroney is arguably one of the female country artists in focus currently. She is just about to head for a European tour as well. On 12th July 2024, Moroney released her sophomore album Am I Okay?. Here are my thoughts.

Megan Moroney – About The Artist

Megan Ann Moroney is a 9th October 1997-born country music artist from Savannah, Georgia. She learned the piano in childhood years and opened for a Chase Rice concert while in University. Her first release was the 2021 single Wonder, which lead to the EP Pistol Made of Roses in 2022. The same year, she had her breakthrough with the single release Tennessee Orange, which was a Top 5 in the US Country Airplay as well as in the Canadian Country Charts. The song received double platinum status b the RIAA. Togehter with the following single I’m Not Pretty, this paved the route to success for her debut album Lucky released in May 2023

Megan Moroney – Am I Okay? – Track by Track

The 14 track album lasts 46 minutes.

1. Am I Okay?

The album opens with its title track. Am I Okay? is a straight modern country song with a pop attitude. Something like the “feel-good” guarantee at the beginning of this listen.

‘Cause oh my God, he walked in
Like a 6’2″ dream, heaven-sent
He says what he means and he means what he says
And he’s funny and he’s smart and he’s good in (Good in)
Maybe love ain’t always what it was
Not crying and dying and messing me up
I think I’m really happy, I think I want to stay
Oh my God, am I okay?

2. Third Time’s The Charm

I fell in love at sweet sixteen
Ain’t ever felt a cut that deep
I blamed him, and he blamed me
I cried so hard I couldn’t breathe

With Third Time’s The Charm, the album turns into a very personal direction. The ballad about an on-off relationship is definitely touching. Lyrics like But now I think it’s happening again, you put a brand new kind of wind back in my sails are simply beautiful to listen to. Tonight, I’m laying in your arms, praying that the third time’s the charm – let’s keep the fingers crossed that this time it is turning out to be a good love story. The song about it is beautiful, indeed.

3. No Caller ID

Out of all Am I Okay? singles released, No Caller ID has been the most successful one. The song is again very straight and personal (I’m two months deep in therapy, been finally getting sleep). The slightly whiny touch in Moroney’s voice feels like being the perfect fit. Lovely listen.

4. Man On The Moon

After these emotional moments, the more rocking Man On The Moon feels even more energetic. The song reminds me of early Shania Twain works. Even though the song is about another love story. Moroney concludes the chorus with I think it’s time we put another man on the moon. She has quite drastic methods to deal with unhappy love, indeed.

5. 28th of June

Unhappy love is the topic of this piano ballad as well. 28th of June has been the first anniversary of her relation the year before, now it is just an ordinary day. Moroney puts her memories into melodies in a beautiful way. I absolutely enjoy it.

6. Indifferent

Indifferent is another more energetic and rocking song. How sweet it is to be so, so indifferent is the angry and frustrated message behind this sixth track on Am I Okay?. The song has a nice groove and touch, which turns it into a really enjoyable listen.

7. Noah

Noah, do you think about me? – this time the songs about love and relationship are even connected to a name. The song is about a school love memories. The gentle track driven by the strumming guitar is a nice one. It also comes with a nice melody. Nonetheless, it does not feel as sharp to me as the majority of songs before.

8. Miss Universe

Then I got a goodbye call
‘Cause he found a beauty queen
I’m in a dive bar drinking
While she’s in a magazine
Yeah, it hurt like hell
But hell, it could’ve been worse
At least my whole world left me for Miss Universe

Another song, another breakup. This time, it is about a guy finding a more beautiful girl than Megan Moroney. By that, the song somehow also criticizes the superficiality of nowadays society. A nice song with a nice vibe.

9. Mama I Lied

No alcohol, no weed – Megan Moroney stated that she has always been the good girl in her teenage years. In this song, she states Mama, I lied. Another very personal song on this album. With strings in the background, the song has a bit of a kitschy touch.

10. I Know You

If you follow the story-line of Am I Okay?, you just more and more struggle with the choice of guys in Megan Moroney’s life. This song is about not trusting your boyfriend – or, even stronger, knowing that he will cheat you. A rather short track, which still leaves a strong mark.

I’m two-thousand miles away, and you can’t help that you can’t change
You’ll wake up with her in the bed I made
I know you

11. The Girls

God bless the girls – this song spreads some unexpected positive vibes again. I am sure that especially female fans will love singing this one on the upcoming tour. The catching melody and nice lyrics turn this song to one of the best ones on the album, which haven’t been featured as a single.

12. Heaven By Noon

Would have said so much more if I only knew
That you’d be in Heaven by noon

Especially after the uplifting The Girls, this song feels even more intense. Such a sad story on the one side, but excellent storytelling on the other. Megan Moroney is amazing in these kind of songs.

13. Hope You’re Happy

While most of the breakup songs in this album have an rather angry touch, this one feels rather harmonic. Another beautiful country music ballad by the Georgia artist.

I hope you finally make your way to California
I hope you find someone that loves you like I do
I hope your ships never start sinking
And your daddy, he quits drinking
And you hit every green light driving down the road
I hope you’re happy
And I hope I never know

14. Hell Of A Show

The closing track Hell Of A Show has been released right before the album. This one is special in many ways. It is just featuring Megan and her guitar, it feels like a live acoustic recording, there is even a sigh in the middle of song. Just 1:47 minutes, but a lovely way to finish this set of 14 songs.

Megan Moroney – Am I Okay? – My View

Am I Okay? is an album full of love, break-ups and emotions. Megan Moroney beautifully turns these happenings into music. The album feels very relatable, very honest and straight. I absolutely enjoyed listening to her on this 14 track journey – even though some stages in the middle of the album feel a bit weaker.
