SSF Dragons Bonn (Women) – ETV Lady PiranHHas Hamburg 4-2 (2-0, 2-1, 0-1)

At 15th February 2025, the German Floorball Bundesliga division came to the end of a regular season. My local club SSF Dragons Bonn had a triple home match day on that day, all three facing teams of ETV PiranHHas Hamburg. The second match of the day was their final match day of the women’s division. Bonn potentially needed to score (depending on the other matches) in order to secure their third spot in the league’s table.

SSF Dragons Bonn – ETV Lady PiranHHas Hamburg – Match Report

Bonn had the better start of this match. Both teams acted rather cautious, Hamburg felt to be stronger in controlling the rink. However, it was Jana Felix in the fourth minute who gave her team the lead after a left wing attack. This gave Bonn the chance to slow down the game, majorly playing defensively and launching some attacks from time to time. The Lady PiranHHas did not find too many chances to turn the match control into scoring chances as well.

On top of that, the guests did a couple of major mistakes. One of them lead to Bonn’s second goal. Anika Weißkirchen did not have to do too much to catch a precise pass from the Hamburg defense on her stick. She passed two more defenders in the 18th minute and also profited from a deflection so that the ball somehow crossed the line. This was also the score after 20 minutes. Hamburg was definitely unlucky so far, but also struggled to profit from their big names in offense.

Bonn increases the lead in the Second Period

The second period started more pleasing for hamburg. A lovely shot by Maria Kapteina lead to the intermediate 2-1 score after just 41 seconds. However, this did not really lead to confidence on the guest team side. The only dangerous shot in the first minutes by Bonn was by defender Friederike Schlotmann, whose unlucky pass attempt could have almost lead to an own goal. Thus, it was quite surprising that Bonn scored in the 28th minute, some two minutes later. Sarah Olfe had a nice snipe and increased the lead to two goals. Just 35 seconds later, another turnover lead to Bonn’s fourth goal. Weißkirchen went for the five-hol of unlucky Hamburg goalie Mieke Flathmann for the 4-1 score.

Hamburg did have some chances thereafter, also due to some Bonn defensive irritations. However, Marlene Oertel, the hosts’ netminder had a very solid day and saved the three goal advantage until the second intermission. Especially her save against the local lady Randi Kleerbaum in a fast break situation was worth mentioning. In the meantime, there were bench penalties to both teams. None of them lead to too much excitement for the audience.

Hamburg not strong enough to fight back

The time felt to tick down without too many really good chances in the third period. In the ninth minute though, a clear Kleerbaum goal was not given by the referees, which felt like the icing on the bad performance cake for the third party involved at Sportpark Nord. Briefly thereafter, the match felt to get an unintentionally funny turn. Hamburg’s backup goalie Leonie Kurth claimed from the bench that Hamburg had no advantage in an avantage situation. This call was really hard to hear, but the referees had better ears than the audience and sent Hamburg into box play (10th).

A fifth goal in power play could have broken Hamburg’s neck in that match. However, it was Amina Rix, who converted a fast break short-handed in the 11th minute, which closed the gap to just two goals. Even though Hamburg pulled Flathmann in the last minutes, they could not put too much pressure on Oertel’s goal, so that the SSF Dragons Bonn easily went for the victory.

SSF Dragons Bonn – ETV Lady PiranHHas Hamburg – My View of the Match

The match did not feel like the battle of the two top teams, chasing and challenging unbeaten MFBC Leipzig right before the play-offs. Bonn was smarter and more effective in this match and thus deservedly sealed the third place after the regular season. They thus got the presumably best setting for the pre-semifinals, facing the Red Devils Wernigerode. The Lady PiranHHas did not fully convince in the Rheinland region, but now have a break before the semifinal matches to consolidate their play for these matches, likely facing Bonn again.
