In the second posting about the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, I take you to the VW ZeitHaus Museum  (ZeitHaus translates to “TimeHouse”). It is the museum driven by Volkswagen on the exhibition grounds. You can visit it as part of your ordinary Autostadt visit. Here is my review.

VW ZeitHaus Museum – Location & Admission

The VW ZeitHaus Museum is located at the Western edge of Autostadt Wolfsburg. From the main entrance, it is just a short walk. The Autostadt is well connected by public transport.

The museum times are in line with the Autostadt itself, i.e. 10:00 to 18:00 daily. There is no additional admission for the museum, it is included in the ticket to the park. This means the typical adult admission is 18 Euro.

VW ZeitHaus Museum – The Visit

You take a long escalator up from the ground floor to the top of the museum. The ZeitHaus features a total of 260 vehicles representing 60 brands, according to its website. You cannot deny a certain focus on Volkswagen, though. Ideally, you then head right or left and go down to the ground floor. The right wing features the Beziehungs-Kisten exhibition (a word play in German you cannot really translate, something like “Cars you relate to”). The left wing (in the direction of the escalator) features the Design Ikonen (“Design Icons”). A brief documentation to the cars is available in German and English. Some cars feature glass showcases with additional items on the pedestral they located on. A nice feature are QR codes, which allow you to listen to the sound of the cars’ engines.

We did not split our visit into the two exhibitions, but therefor went in one route from the top to the bottom. You can spot the “Design Icons” by the darker background in the pictures. The range of cars is really nice. You cannot enter any of them. The windows are typically closed, which might obstruct the view into the interior. Nonetheless, it is an interesting exhibition, even though there are not that many unique or special cars in the ZeitHaus. It does feature a wide range of automobile history, though. I would have also expected a more open and critical focus on the role of Volkswagen in the Nazi era around WWII.

VW ZeitHaus Museum – Services

On the ground floor, the ZeitHaus hosts a lovely cafe, which is reminding of Vienna coffee house styles. The souvenir store is in the main entrance area. It features a wide range of items – quite some of them do not really relate with automobile history or the Volkswagen brand. For a more convenient stay, the technical museum also provides lockers.

VW ZeitHaus Museum – My View

The VW ZeitHaus Museum is a nice place. The range of cars is good and offers some nice highlights. It is definitely a very worthy part of visiting the Autostadt. Nonetheless, I have been to more interesting and more fascinating places.
