After my field event coverage of the first day in Braunschweig was rather limited, I hoped that especially the Sunday morning schedule would give me some more opportunity for a couple of good snaps. Here is my field event coverage of the second day of the German Athletics Nationals 2024 in the Eintracht Stadion in Braunschweig.

German Athletics Nationals 2024 – Day 2 Field Events
The Sunday field events started with two decisions on the women’s side. The first event of the day to kick off was the women’s javelin throw. Favorite Christin Hussong (LAV Zweibrücken) took the lead with her second attempt. It felt she was the definite winner on that evening, but in her very last attempt, John Alyssa (SC Magdeburg) shocked the competition with a personal best of 59.59 meters. In the very last throw of the day, Christin Hussong took back the lead, becoming German champion with a distance of 60.53 meters.
Just ten minutes after the javelin throw, the women kicked off their high jump finals. Christina Honsel (TV Wattenscheid) and Johanna Göring (SV Salamander Kornwestheim) both could not pass the bar at 1.88m and thus finished with 1.85m, being tied for the silver medal. The queen of high jumping on that day was Imke Onnen (Hannover 96), who won the competition with 1.88 meters.
Dominating Winner in the Men’s Triple Jump
Finally, there were male athletes on the field as well. In the male triple jump, Max Heß (LAC Erdgas Chemnitz) gave his peers not a piece of a chance, winning with 16.90m over his teammate Steven Freund (15.45m). Thereafter, Braunschweig hosted the men’s hammer throw, which I could not cover. Eintracht Frankfurt celebrated their gold medal winner Sören Klose (75.70m) in that discipline. He beat Merlin Hummel (UAC Kulmbach, 74.37m) in the sixth and last round.
The scheduled men’s pole vault event had to be delayed multiple times due to the heavy rain. As it ran rather late, I did not cover it. Under difficult wet conditions, only six out of thirteen athletes passed the bar at all. ATV’ Düsseldorf’s Bo Kanda Lita Baehre won with a height of 5.70 meters. Bayer Leverkusen’s Hendrik Müller was the only other contestant making a jump higher than 5.00m (5.20m). In the women’s shot put, Yemesi Ogunleye (MTG Mannheim) was the best athlete in the tricky conditions, winning the contest with 19.25 meters. Due to the outfield photographer accreditation, I could not cover he men’s hammer throw, which Sören Klose (Eintracht Frankfurt) won. He profited from an impressive series of throws, with 75.50 meters being his best attempt.
Close Women’s Long Jump
With three enlisted sportswomen not starting and Mikaelle Assani (SCL Heel Baden-Baden) retiring after the first jump, the women’s long jump was a very close competition. Maryse Luzolo (Königsteiner LV) had the best attempt of the afternoon (6.48m). The audience was shocked that Laura Raquel Müller (Unterländer LG) injured her knee in the second attempt. However, she was able to have a successful third jump, which was not good enough to qualify for the last three jumps. The men’s discus throw was won by Clemens Prüfer (SC Potsdam), who became German champion with a distance of 65.95 meters.
