Club Volta again – just three days after I featured the Stephen Wilson Jr. concert there, I was back at the Cologne venue. Sound of Nashville hosted the show of Koe Wetzel in the East part of the city on 7th November 2024, supported by Giovannie And The Hired Guns. The show was sold out. Here is my concert report.

Club Volta – About The Venue
Club Volta is the smaller sister venue of Carlswerk Victoria in Cologne. It is located in the former industrial area Schanzenviertel. It is quite convenintly located by tram services to Keupstraße (line 4 or 14). There is also a parking garage (5 Euro evening tariff) right next to the venue. Club Volta has a capacity of roughly 400.
Koe Wetzel – About The Artists
Ropyr Madison Koe Wetzel is a1992-born, Texas-origin, US American country rock artist. He turned into a professional musician at the age of 22. He originally was part of the band Koe Wetzel and Konvicts, with which he released his debut album Out on Parole in 2016. His second album (released as a solo one) Noise Complaint (2016) is regarded being his breakout album. He released six albums so far. The two most recent ones, Hell Paso (2022) and 9 Lives (2024), made it to the Top 5 of the US Country Charts.
Wetzel was support by Giovannie And The Hired Guns on his Cologne show. The 2010-founded band from Stephenville, Texas, is named after their lead, singer and songwriter Giovannie Yanez. They do country rock music. So far, the band has released four studio album and a live one. They came to Cologne presenting their 2024 release Land of the Lost.
Koe Wetzel – The Show
Giovannie And The Hired Guns stepped on stage right at 20:00. Unfortunately, I am neither too much into their music nor have a setlist of the evening. However, during their thirty minute set, they did what a support act should do in excellent manner. Their powerful way of doing Southern rock with some Mexican and hip hop influences spread energy from the very first moment. They blended their songs with popular tracks, like in the final song Ramon Ayala, which they blended with Party Like It’s Your Birthday. They also impressed by their very agile appearance on stage – these guys were definitely fun – even though being one of the most unusual Sound of Nashville acts I have seen so far.
At around 21:02, Koe Wetzel kicked off his set in the sold-out Cologne venue. His set was roughly 90 minutes, consisting of almost twenty songs. The first tracks of the Cologne show were Twister, Fuss & Fight and Sundy or Mundy. Thereby, Koe Wetzel and his band continued with the rock energy their support had already spread through Club Volta. Some of his most successful songs songs like Good Die Young and Sweet Dreams were rather at the middle of his set. The crowd partied with the band and waved cowboy hats from the auditorium. However, I would not point out any highlights of the set. Koe Wetzel and his bandmates felt solid, maybe a bit too constant. Two of his biggest ones, High Road and Something to Talk About, finished their last show in Germany, before heading to Scandinavia.

Koe Wetzel – My View
I absolutely loved the support act on this Sound of Nashville evening in Cologne, though I do understand that some visitors felt a bit of confused. Their indie-Southern rock sound was definitely a bit special, but I felt that Giovannie And The Hired Guns were a very energetic, powerful act. Koe Wetzel showed a good show, even though some better connection to the fans here and there could have boosted that evening in Cologne to a higher level.
