Flyctory.com Pros

  • Great songs and songwriting
  • Wide range of very catching song
  • ... which are still keeping up a 49 Winchester signature

Country rock at its finest – 49 Winchester are definitely an act in this genre who also left a strong mark in the genre in Europe. My recent coverage of their May 2024 show in Cologne is a perfect illustration for that. On 2nd August 2024, they share their new album Leavin’ This Holler – time to have a listen to it.

49 Winchester – About The Artists

Teh self-titled debut album of 49 Winchester is dated as of 2014. In 2024, the band opened for Luke Combs – lead singer Isaac Gibson comments that with There’s been nothing in my life that’s ever lasted a decade, We had just gotten out of high school when we played our first show — 10 years later we’re opening for Luke Combs at the O2 Arena on the band’s website. Apart from Gibson, the band consists of Bus Shelton (lead guitar), Chase Chafin (bass), Noah Patrick (pedal steel), Tim Hall (keys) and Justin Louthian (drums). In 2022, I reviewed their most recent album release so far, Fortune Favors The Bold. It has been the Virginia band’s fourth album overall.

49 Winchester – Leavin’ This Holler – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 43 minutes.

1. Favor

Even though the first chords of Favor feel a bit more dark and heavy, the opener of Leavin’ This Holler is a comparably light song, which has a very straight and traditional country music touch. The key element of the song is the swinging vibe, though.

2. Hillbilly Happy

The second song of the album is the first one which has already been shared by the band. Hillbilly Happy is a typical 49 Winchester track, merging country and Western elements with pure rock’n’roll feeling. Time to dance, time to party, time to enjoy.

3. Yearnin’ For You

One of the two key single releases before the album release has been Yearnin’ For You. The song is less rocking than its predecessor, but comes with a nice, fast backing rhythm. No chance that you are not caught by these vibes. Another key instrument is the pedal steel in here.

4. Make It Count

The block of three already released songs is closed by Make It Count. The song is presenting a clear country rock heart with intense riff and a very energetic feeling. Fun one.

5. Leavin’ This Holler (feat. Maggie Antone)

Maggie Antone is definitely a hot act in the country music social media scene. She is extremely popular on TikTok, where some 650k users are following her. 49 Winchester chose this lady to perform the title track of their 2024 album together. A really nice, hymnic and epic song, which almost lasts six minutes and nicely presents a ballad with a clear signature by the Virginia-origin band.

6. Fast Asleep

The last single release so far on the album is Fast Asleep. 49 Winchester continue with an emotional listen on Leavin’ This Holler. This time, there is not too much more than Shelton’s voice and an acoustic guitar in the verses. However, the rock energy breaks out in the angry chours.

7. Tulsa

To me, Tulsa is a feel-good song. It is not too slow, not too fast, not too rocking, not kitschy. It is simply enjoyable, without denying the typical style of the artists. Really nice one.

8. Rest of My Days

Rest of My Days comes with a strong groove and thus even reminds of blues rock songs. Needless to say that 49 Winchester are not bad at all in this discipline as well. The pedal steel keeps up a strong country music spirit and thus turns the song into a very special part of the ten song set.

9. Traveling Band

A Tom Petty-style song takes the second last position in Leavin’ This Holler. A nice road trip soundtrack pick – which somehow also nicely fits to the topic of the song.

10. Anchor

The chucker-out of the album is the 5:40 minute song Anchor. The song has a melancholic touch, but especially impresses with a catching and fasinating atmosphere, including strings. A very special and poetic listen at the end of this album.

49 Winchester – Leavin’ This Holler – My View

The US-Americans underline that they are producing a very characteristic sound – and great stories. The ten songs take a wide range of different tracks. There is even some virtuosity in the final one, Anchor. I really enjoyed listening to this album.

Favorite Song: Anchor
