Percival (Song of My Life Show, Erftstadt, 12th September 2024)

I absolutely loved the intimate, personal, but also very professional atmosphere of the Jessica Lynn show at the Muxx.tv grounds in Erftstadt near Cologne. Thus, I was really happy that Martin, the host of these events, invited me to be at the next episode of his Songs of My Life live-streamed concert. This time, his Muxx.tv hosted Percival, fully named Percival Duke. In contrast to Jessica Lynn’s show, you could expect a very different setup. I was excited and looked forward to share this 12th September 2024 show with you

This posting comes with 507 major size pictures as part of the concert gallery.

MUXX.tv – About The Project

Percival – About The Artists

Percival Duke-Hall is a Dallas-born US-American artist who nowadays lives in Germany. He is half Cherokee decent. He initially worked in several Broadway musical productions. Then his career expanded to Europe. However, he initially toured there as a support act for major artists like Alanis Morissette with different bands and worked as a background musician. He appeared in the German TV talent show The Voice of Germany in 2011/12 and was eliminated two rounds before the final.

Nonetheless, this grew his popularity and in early 2012, three of his cover versions made it to the German and partially to the Austrian charts. One year later, he released his debut album Never Shut Up! So far, Percival released four studio albums and three EPs. The latest major release was the EP The Making of Me, released in 2023. In Erftstadt, Percival acted in his Percival and the Chanson setup, including a pianist, a cellist and a violinist.

Le Flow supporting Percival

Like most of the visitors, I was quite surprised that there was an opening act for Percival. Melanie Heizmann and Markus Gahlen were simply announced as Melanie & Markus. However, they typically are on stage as Le Flow. The duo is doing music together since way more than a decade. Heizmann is a 1972-born German artist, who already collaborated with some major acts and was part of several TV productions. Guitarist and singer Markus Gahlen is looking back to a long list of collaborations as well, Apart from their individual work and their duo, Gahlen and Heizmann also are part of the vocal quartet LoLa. Both are living in Cologne.

Percival – The Show

Melanie Heizmann and Markus Gahlen did a real Song of my Life set, especially at the beginning, where the artists shared songs, which they personally relate to. One of the first songs was James Taylor’s Something in the Way She Moved, which was very inspiring for Markus, followed by (They Long To Be) Close To You, originally by the Carpenters. When the duo performed Nik Kershaw’s Wouldn’t It be Good, the people even started singing along with the artists. Later, Melanie was in the lead, performing Madonna’s Frozen. However, the 50 minute set also included less known songs like the Italian lyric Acquarello by the Brazilian artist Toquinho. They closed with Gahlen’s very own Opposite Sides, a song about Markus long-term friendship, which finally turned into a marriage just in 2024.

Soulful and Emotional Percival

Percival’s performance was a little more than one hour. Very early in the show, he explained that host Martin and he had planned this living room gig for so long – but his rock band would have just been been too loud for a venue like this. The more, his song selection worked out in this intimate setting – and the much more neighborhood-friendly instrumentation. Especially German-Brazilian pianist Noah Reiss Ramma, who had also written the arrangements, did an impressing job besides the US-American artist. Percival started with two songs by French composer Michel Legrand, The Windmills of Your Mind and The Summer Knows. His set was more or a less a chronological musical journey of his lift.

Percival did a very personal show, sharing stories like financing his first steps into Broadway musical in New York City als a male prostitute. He dedicated his third song, Rainbow Sleeves (originally by Rickie Lee Jones) to all his friends, who are no longer among us. Before and after that song, there were some tears in the eyes of the artist. He moderated his songs in German and English, due to many foreign listeners of the live stream. He also sang in French, sharing an Edith Piaf song (stating If I had a music idol, it was Edith Piaf). However, there was also the Queen classic Under Pressure and a German song by Hildegart Knef. He closed the set with his own Big Girl, before he partied an amazing encore with his pianist, Prince’s original Purple Rain.

Percival  – My View

Again, I fell in love with music for two hours. The setting at the Muxx.tv living room is amazing. The artists did great music and you felt so close to them. However, you could not describe the magical, familiar, and unique atmosphere without praising the amazing, hosts Martin Ernst and  Dorien Deighton, who are not only sharing their living space, but are a huge factor that these two hour shows (with some intermission) in Erftstadt create memories. The second time I was gifted to be at one of their live streams – and the second time they gave me a memory I will never forget. Hope to back in their very special place soon.
