The Imagine Dragons have been one of the key US American acts of the 2010’s. Thus, I was really curious when I received their sixth studio album, Loom, a few days before the release. The release date has been 28th June 2024.

Imagine Dragons – About The Artists

The Imagine Dragons have been founded in 2008 in Las Vegas. They defined a very unique sound, which is somewhere between rock, pop and alternative sounds. Currently, the band is a quartet lead by Dan Reynolds (vocals, guitars, piano, percussion), who is also the only founding member left. He is accompanied by Wayne Sermon (guitars) and Ben McKee (bass, keyboard), who joined the Imagine Dragons in 2009. In 2023, Daniel Platzman came back as the drummer of the band.

The first album of the band has been Night Vision, released in 2012. Driven by multiple successful single releases like Radioactive and Demons, the song sold great globally. It is a seven time platinum record in the United Stated, but also a double platinum in Italy or a triple gold in Germany. However, the following albums very very popular as well. The last Imagine Dragons album released was Mercury – Act 1 in 2021.

Imagine Dragons – Loom – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 32 minutes.

1. Wake Up

Loom is coming with quite a range of different songs. The opener Wake Up as a very groovy style and rather feels like a modern hip hop-pop song. The rock music influence to this is rather minimal. Instead, I think about Eminem songs here and there.

2. Nice to Meet You

The modern pop touch of the album continues with the single release Nice to Meet You. There is a nice groove, even though there is not really a hip hop touch in it. Therefor, the song has a nice summer pop touch.

3. Eyes Closed

The song Eyes Closed is included in Loom twice. This third song of the album is not coming without guest musicians. The hip hop style is back. However, the guitars have a bit more presence, the song is having a rather dark and heavy atmosphere.

4. Take Me to the Beach

The title of the fourth track already has has a summer feeling. Indeed, the song has a nice summer groove. Take me to the beach, you can have the mountains, you take the snow – it’s way too cold. It feels like the Imagine Dragons have a clear preference about how to spend their free time, I guess. I just cannot deny that this song is staying in your mind.

5. In Your Corner

If you know and liked the big songs of the Imagine Dragons from their earlier years of the band career, In Your Corner might be the the first track, which really make you smile while listening. The song has that special and unique touch. It does not feel like an alien in this set of ten tracks, but has a certain, almost “nostalgic” touch.

6. Gods Don’t Pray

Gods Don’t Pray has a very groovy style. I partially even feel reggae vibes in there. The song is another cool track which especially works well in summer days. The song also has a nice balance of a rough-rocking attitude and alternative vibes.

7. Don’t Forget Me

This one is one of the most impressing songs of the album. It feels like a ballad in the context of the album, but it is also very intense and hymnic. The slowly marching rhythm is another key element of Don’t Forget Me. Great work on the instrumental as well as on the vocal side.

8. Kid

A pop rhythm, a rock melody and an alternative touch in the vocal touch – this part of the album is the most pleasing to me. Despite the song is rather short (2:40 minutes), it presents quite a nice variety of elements.

9. Fire in These Hills

Fire In These Hills feels like a ballad. The song has a lovely vocal centric touch. However, it almost takes until the end until the song breaks up and also comes with a stronger instrumental presence. Before that, I struggle with the present rhythm, which is popping up here and there.

10. Eyes Closed (feat. J. Balvin)

The final track version of Eyes Closed feels very similar to the one given on the album earlier. Overall, only the Spanish lyrics added by the Columbian reggaeton artist J Balvin add a bit of a difference. Is that worth an additional track? I struggle with it.

Imagine Dragons – Loom – My View

I’m definitely not a close follower of the band. Thus, my thought maybe be a rather limited quality opinion. Nonetheless, the key issue I have with Loom is: it does not feel like Imagine Dragons. I even struggle to state that it feels like one album. The first half is different than the second – just like two EPs were stuck together. I definitely prefer the second half of songs, even though the starting section also has some nice moments. The album as a whole does not fully convince me.
