Kourion Archaeological Park has definitely been one of the highlights of my trip to Cyprus in October 2023. However, this place is majorly about the structure of the ancient settlements, the excavations and the mosaics. The most interesting historic items can of course be found in the amazing Cyprus Museum in Nicosia. Nonetheless, it is not too surprising that the site featured many more items. A nice selection of them can be found in the Local Archaeological Museum of Kourion, just a short drive away from the archaeological park.
Museum of Kourion – Location & Admission
The Local Archaeological Museum of Kourion is located in the heart of the little village of Episkopi. The museum is centrally located in a villa-alike building. A fun fact about the museum is that it is politically located in Cyprus. That might not sound too exceptional regarding a Cypriot city, but the archaeological park is in fact located in the military area being part of the United Kingdom. There is a small square next to the museum, where you can park your car. In peak visiting times, this might be a key challenge about the museum.
Like most historic museums in Cyprus, the Kourion Museum is driven by the Department of Antiquities. This leads to rather long, reliable opening times. At the time of writing, the museum is opening Monday to Friday 8:00 to 15:30. Admission to the museum is free.
Museum of Kourion – The Visit
The museum consists of just a few rooms on ground floor level of the building. Documentation is in Greek and English, so that you easily get around. The presentation is absolutely fine and there is quite a nice range of items in display. In one room, there are figurines, vases and similar items. There are typically not that many tourists around. On the one hand, this is really a shame as this place would definitely
Another exhibition area also features some larger vases and parts of statues. Apart from that, you have a lovely view of the sea from the museum. Overall, my wife and I spend roughly 45 minutes in the museum, which was way longer than we originally expected.
Museum of Kourion – Services
The staff of the museum (it felt that they also live in the upper part of the building) was helpful and friendly. There are no other touristic services like a cafe or similar in the museum, but the village itself has a few opportunities.
Museum of Kourion – My View
I really liked the Local Archaeological Museum of Kourion. Of course, you cannot compare it to the Cyprus Museum, but there are some quite interesting artifacts and the atmosphere is relaxed. And you get all that for free – really nice. I definitely would recommend to go for this place before or after you visited the archaeological park.
