  • Nice, fluent guitar rock with an Americana touch
  • Versatile set of songs

Guitar rock made from Nashville – doesn’t sound too bad, does it? It is the second time I feature an album release by Bones Owens after his self-titled debut released in 2021. His new album Love Out Of Lemons has been released on 12th July 2024. Here are my thoughts.

Bones Owens – About The Artist

Bones Owens, whose civil first name is Caleb, is a Missouri-native artist. He moved to Nashville at the age of 21. His initial career was rather as a stage and studio musician. Carrie Underwood or Bon Jovi – he worked with these guys already.  In the 2010’s, he released two EPs, before his debut album Bones Owens has finally been released.

Bones Owens – Love Out Of Lemons – Track by Track

The eleven track album lasts 35 minutes.

1. Love out of Lemons

The title track is opening the album. Love out of Lemons is a nice guitar rock track with some groovy blues rock touch. A good one to get into the right mood for what is still yet to come.

2. Devil Gonna Getcha

Right in line with its title, Devil Gonna Getcha feels rougher and harder than the song before. The howling vocals in the middle of the song also adds a certain ease to the listen.

3. For Keeps

With three rather short songs in a row, the album creates a certain speed and agility. For Keeps is the second one of this set of songs. The heavy riffs define this track. The song comes with a nice groove as well, especially the instrumental part is staying in your mind.

Well there ain’t no relief
When you’re down on your knees
If you want a hand up, you gotta stand up
And start playin for keeps

4. Get It On

With 2:27 minutes, the single release Get It On is the shortest track of the album. The song comes with quite some speed and a very present rhythm, so that you rather would love to listen to this one for a bit longer.

5. Summer Skin

Riding on the summer wind
Our bikes go down the highway
Trying on your summer skin
Yeah we were getting high, babe

The longest track on Love Out Of LemonsSummer Skin, follows right after the the briefest one. The guitars stay rough and rocking, but the melody adds a nice and gentle touch to the song. Summer feelings for rock music fans are guaranteed.

6. Sinking Like a Stone

Sinking Like a Stone is a slower mid-tempo track. The focus is on the storytelling, indeed. Overall, there is a melancholic touch in this song, which suits to the farewell story.

Saw you sinking like a stone
You know I hate to see you go

7. Born Again

Smalltown Jesus
Drowns the pain
Have they forgotten how
He used to move the chains
A king begotten there
To take ‘em all the way
A king forgotten
Since his graduation day

I can see you’re dying to be born again – the seventh track born again directly connects to its predecessor. However, after the melancholic listen before, this one is more present, more rocking again. The guitars and drums lead you through more than three minute, the vocals are impressing and stay in your mind. One of my favorite songs of the album.

8. Goin’ Back Where I Came From

The music video features a motorbike – and indeed, this one is a cool rocker for a road trip. However, don’t be too inspired by the smashing riffs – you might quickly overspeed. Nice listen with great work on the six-string side.

9. Don’t Hold Out on Me

The ninth track is having a straight blues rock attitude. The combination of rocking guitars turn this one into a very enjoyable listen. Like it.

10. Higher Than I Wanna Be

Higher Than I Wanna Be is a bit slower again and focuses more on the melodic beauty. This leads to a traditional touch. The song is enjoyable, but feels weaker and less impressing than other tracks on Love Out Of Lemons.

11. You Some More

The album closes like it was opening: with a straight Americana rocker. The sound reminds me of Tom Petty and makes me smile.

All I want
Is to love
All I want
Is to love
You some more

Bones Owens – Love Out Of Lemons – My View

Love Out Of Lemons is a very fluent and enjoyable album. There are a lot of nice guitar elements in it. Quite many songs leave a mark and stay in your mind. I definitely feel it is better than Bones Owens’ debut (which was already a good one). If you like guitar rock with an Americana touch, this one is definitely worth listening.

Favorite Song: Born Again
