Red Sky July are back. Their new album Misty Morning is the first album since about nine years. I had a chance listening to the record, which has been released on 28th February 2025. Here is my review.

Red Sky July – About The Artists

Red Sky July is a British band, which is doing alternative country and Americana music. They have been founded in 2009 with a quite prominent setup. Scottish Ally McErlaine has a history with Texas, English Shelly Poole was part of Alisha’s Attic and Charity Hair has a background with The Alice Band and The Ailerons. Charity Hair has left the trio in the meantime and has been replaced by Haley Glennie-Smith. In 2011, they released their self-titled debut album. Especially their third album The Truth and the Lie, released in 2016, got quite some attention. At the British CMA Awards of that year, it was nominated for the UK Album of the Year. Since then, the band released four EPs, the last one being Passerine in 2021.

Red Sky July – Misty Morning – Track by Track

The ten track album lasts 32 minutes.

1. Stones And Brambles

The opener Stones And Brambles is a gentle, melodic song with country and folk elements. The song impresses with the vocal collaboration of the two female artists.

2. Kings Of Better Things

Kings Of Better Things works with the same elements as the opener, but overall presents a more complex plot. The song starts dramatic, but then turns into a nice melodic flow. A nice listen with country and folk flavors.

3. I Found Angels

Fans of vocal-driven country songs will love I Found Angels. Shelley Poole and Haley Gienne-Smith do a wonderful job on the microphone, the background instrumentation is doing just what is needed. Some gentle rhythm, fine guitar and fiddle sounds. The third track comes with a beautiful, dreaming atmosphere.

4. Utah (feat. Joe Hammill)

For the fourth song Utah, the alternative country trio joined forces with Joe Hammill. He is also present on the microphone on that track, which leads to a nice dialog-style listen. The chorus comes with the sound Red Sky July presented on the songs before, but feels really striking in this song.

5. Platform 5

The slow Platform 5 is the fifth song of Misty Morning. In general, the music of Red Sky July is focused on the storytelling, but the lyrics of this song is especially beautiful and lyrical. The gentle vocals feel like a perfect fit to that.

6. Two Magicians

At the beginning of the second half of the album, the British trio takes us to the Two Magicians. The song is more snappy and also faster, even though the vocal-centric concept reminds. The accentuation of the two singers spread so many vibes that you don’t need to go for too much more. This three minute song is one of the most atmospheric listens.

7. Misty Morning

The next song on the record is its title track. The sound of Misty Morning is a bit more mysterious, just as you would expect this to be, based on the title. This time, especially the guitar is taking a more leading role. There are also more intense rhythmical elements in the track, which overall turns it into a very special part of the album.

8. Stars Turn Cold

Stars Turn Cold, another single release of the album, comes with a comparably instrumental-driven sound as well. This definitely increases the country music vibes of that track. One of the nicest listens on Misty Morning.

9. Pool Party

Even though the title Pool Party might suggest a zesty listen, Red Sky July rather slow down the sound of the album again for that one. The fine, fragile vocals are again a lovely part of the listen. This Pool Party almost comes with lullaby feelings – but it is still a good one.

10. Cut Me Down

Cut Me Down closes the 2025 Red Sky July album in a very atmospheric style. If you enjoyed the songs before, this one will definitely be a treat for you as well.

Red Sky July – Misty Morning – My View

The style of Misty Morning is a bit of limited. Apart from Utah, Misty Morning, and Stars Tun Cold, the songs do have a very similar style. However, the songs are beautiful and the trio is telling lovely stories. This is why I absolutely enjoyed that release.

Favorite Song: Utah
