Arriving from New York City by the Amtrak Pennsylvanian Train in the evening, I needed a hotel with good connections to Pittsburgh Station in late October 2023. After I initially booked a Hyatt Hotel on the North Shore, I finally chose the Hilton option and had a night at the Hampton Inn & Suites Pittsburgh Downtown. Here is my experience.
Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Downtown – Location
The hotel is located at Smallman St., right opposite the Senator John Heinz History Center, which also hosts the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum. There are a couple of hotels and a lot of companies around. However, downtown is easy walk away. Walking to PPG Paints Arena is some 20 minutes. From Pittsburgh Union station, it was roughly a five minute walk, with luggage.
If you don’t walk to the hotel like I did, it is typically rather a place for car travelers, though. The hotel uses Nonetheless, the train station is not too far away and there is also Wood St Station of the Pittsburgh Light Rail. This stop is located in the free travel zone. As I came by train, I unfortunately cannot verify it, but the hotel states that there is complimentary self parking for hotel guests.
Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Downtown – Room
I booked a standard room, Friday to Saturday, in October 2023. The room has been paid with Hilton Honors points. Depending on the exact time of booking, the room price would have been between 220 and 300 USD per night, including tax. My Hilton Honors status gave me a really nice upgrade to a suite room. You entered the room through the somewhat-kitchen area, which features a large fridge and a microwave oven. The living space was huge and – as it was a corner room – also had a lot of light and decent views. I loved the large bed and the workspace. A nice feature was also having power outlets almost anywhere you need it, including pads for inductive charging at the bed and the work desk. Bad luck I just stayed in the room for some 16 hours.
The bathroom was nice as well. The sink with a lot of space is in front of the in-fact bathroom, which had a typical North American bathtub. I was quite surprised that this rather new Hampton featured amenities including shower gel in dispensers. The cleanliness of the room was really good. Unfortunately you could hear the street noise here and there.
Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Downtown- Breakfast
As in any Hampton, breakfast is included in the Downtown Pittsburgh location. The breakfast room and the lobby area were rather large. Again, the hotel is rather modern, so that the setting was nice. The range of items was a typical Hampton selection. Nothing too special, but a very nice morning performance.
Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Downtown – Service
The staff at the Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Airport has been really friendly and welcoming. The WiFi in the hotel worked out well, too. The hotel has a lovely spa and sports arena. The gym is nice, but the pool area with a major whirlpool definitely exceeded my expectations.
Hampton Inn Pittsburgh Downtown – My View
The stay at the Hampton Inn was really nice. The hotel is rather modern, the staff was very nice. No need to discuss about the room – it has been one of the best Hampton Inn rooms I have ever been to. A real nice treat is the pool area. I really felt sad that I could not make proper use of it.
