Driving over the Coll d’Ordino (Andorra CS-240/-340)

I was really amazed by my trip to Andorra. The country in the Pyrenees between France and Spain is just incredibly picturesque and has lovely nature. Despite I visited the state in December 2022, I was really lucky to have warm and sunny weather. Thus, I had at least a bit of time for a road trip over the mountains. I chose the routes CS-240 and CS-340, which take you over the Coll d’Ordino. In this Pictured Story, I take you on this picturesque drive.

Andorra CS-240/CS-340 – Location

The drive over the Coll d’Ordino is a 19 km road trip between the cities Ordino in the West and Canillo in the East. I drove in that direction. The road is split into two parts by the mountain itself. The West part from Ordino to the mountain is flagged as CS-340 and called Carretera del Coll d’Ordino. It starts near the Museum of Miniature. The second part of the route is CS-240 or Carretera de Montaup. The route merges into one of the main roads, CS-2, on the Western edge of the city. The mountain also splits the two villages geographically.

The total driving distance is 19 kilometers. Including stops, you should allow for a driving of 45 to 60 minutes. The road is fully paved and can be driven easily with any car. In case of snowy conditions, snow chains are mandatory. The connection over the main road between the two cities is shorter, faster and less hilly – but, obviously, less picturesque as well. The Coll d’Ordino roads have been used for the Tour de France and the Vuelta (cycling) in the past frequently.

I started the trip in Ordino. Already in the city limits, you have the first serpentine roads. The city comes with an elevation of some 1,300 meters. From there, the road climbs up to the pass. The pass height is 1,980 meters. While the road to the pass is curvy and surprisingly full of trees, the area around the pass as such is worth a stop. You have a lovely view over the valley.

The drive down to Canillo has some very nice views, but is overall also more curvy. Like on the whole route, you need to take care of cyclists and other slower vehicles. Right before the end of the rows, there are some narrow and challenging serpentine turns.
