A Pathway To The Moon is the already the seventh album of the Canadian metal project Unrequited. Unfortunately, I did not receive too much bio information about the band on the promotion platform. Release date of the album is 7th February 2025.

Unreqvited – About The Project

Unrequited are doing a mixture of post-metal and atmospheric black metal. It is a project driven and founded by multi-instrumentalist William Melsness. They have been founded in 2016 in Ottawa. The same year, they released the album Disquiet. Their discography also includes a couple of instrumental songsBeautiful Ghosts is the most recent album of the band, dated as of 2021. In 2022, they also released the EP Perpetual Green of the Willow Groves, their third one overall.

Unreqvited – A Pathway To The Moon – Track by Track

The seven track album lasts 41 minutes. There is also an deluxe version with an additional track.

1. Overture: I Disintegrate

The first two minutes of the record are taking by this atmospheric Overture. Female vocals with a lot of reverb making the piano-driven sound like being recorded in a cathedral or similar place.

2. The Antimatter

From the very first second of the epic The Antimatter (over ten minutes duration!), the guitars take over control. The piano is at most in the background, while the song heads towards typical black metal sound with very melodic elements. However, during the full runtime of the track, Unrequited also goes for finer and more quiet parts. There is even a piano section in it. Apart from a few breaks, the song feels very fluent and continuous without feeling lengthy or boring.

3. The Starforger

With eight resp. nine minutes duration, the following two tracks also go for an extensive runtime. This is even more remarkable as these songs, together with The Antimatter, are the single releases of A Pathway To The Moon so far. The Starforger, the third track on the record, thereby mixes typical metal parts with long and atmospheric keyboard sections. A choir-alike background also adds a lot of flavor. A later vocal part comes with a rather and fine melody. Nice one.

4. Void Essence / Frozen Tears

The fourth track is in fact a combination of Void Essence and Frozen Tears. The double-headed song starts with a comparably gentle, but also somehow melancholic touch. However, towards the end of the song, growling becomes the key vocal parts, so that the Canadian project takes us back to their roots. Nice one.

5. Into The Starlit Beyond

A Pathway To The Moon finishes with three so far unreleased tracks. Thereby, Into The Starlit Beyond is the longest listen with over five minutes. Thereby, William Melsness and his band invest a lot into a deep, dark, but also very melodic atmosphere. The strong use of ecoes, especially on the vocal side, stays.  Similar to other tracks in here, the song concludes with a powerful metal part.

6. Celestial Sleep

Celestial Sleep continues with the impressing, instrumental style of Unreqvited. However, with this duration of less than two minutes, it rather heads toward an

7. Cornfield Chase

The record closes with the four minute Cornflied Chase. There is not too much of a chase unitially, though. The project focuses the attention of the listener to the piano, while more and more is accompanied by other instruments and sounds. While the backing vocals lead to an Gregorian chant touch, especially the appearance of guitars adds a lot of energy to this listen.

Unreqvited – A Pathway To The Moon – My View

Unreqvited is able to create intense atmosphere. Their leverage of melodic and metal elements on A Pathway To The Moon strikes. Unfortunately, the songs have a similar plot. With the three single releases beforehand, you also know a major part of this seven track record.

Favorite Song: Cornfield Chase
