Just as it felt convenient to stay somewhere closer to the office where I work, I had a night at the ibis Cologne Frechen. Frechen is in fact a suburb Southwest of Cologne, located close to the motorway orbiter of the metropolis. I was really curious about this Accor Hotel stays, especially as the reviews were a bit of mixed. Here are my thoughts.

 

ibis Cologne Frechen – Location

Frechen is located Southwest of Cologne. The hotel is not located in the city of Frechen, but within a commercial park. You find a wide variety of services there, from fast food restaurants, larger grocery and hardware stores and other facilities. Some of them are located at the opposite site of the A1 motorway, which is geographically part of Marsdorf, a borough of Cologne. The location is right at the Autobahnkreuz Köln-West (Cologne-West Junction), so that you have very good connection in all directions of driving. The Cologne motorway orbiter is typically having congestion at rush hour, which you should bear in mind during your planings.

The hotel location is made for people who travel by car. The public transport options are very limited. The best option is likely the tram line 7, which is served from the Frechen Bahnhof stop. However, this one is a 15 to 20 minute walk away from the hotel. On the other side, the hotel is offering sufficient parking. Even though there were a lot of craftsmen in the hotel, using major cars, which exceed the width of a typical parking lot, I even could easily find a spot when I arrived back at the hotel at around 22:30.

 

ibis Cologne Frechen – Room

I booked a standard room at a non-public rate. I had a room on the upper floor at the end of the aisle. The came with the typical ibis layout. I would love to have better pillows on the bedding, maybe. On the other hand, I really liked the large work desk and the fact that there are two power outlets right next to it. Overall, for the typical visitor, business guests and manufacturing teams, the equipment of the room is absolutely fine.

The bathroom was the typical ibis “cabin” solution. It was clean with amenities provided in dispensers. The soap at the sink likely had been refilled recently as the dispenser was locked and once it was release it was facing in the wrong direction – no big issue. The room was absolutely fine maintained and very clear. Despite the proximity to a major road and the motorways, the room was very quiet – good insulation!

 

ibis Cologne Frechen – Breakfast

The pre-booked breakfast was charged with 8.90 EUR. Regarding the price, the quality of the breakfast was exceptional. They had a large selection of cold cuts and other typical breakfast items. There some really cool bread items, the bread rolls themselves were rather average. On the warm dish side, there was sausage, scrambled egg and boiled egg. Regardless of the price, the breakfast definitely exceeded my expectation compared to other ibis destinations.

At the evening, the hotel is serving basic warm food. I did not check it out, though. the menu felt being similar to the one served at ibis Kassel, though.

 

ibis Cologne Frechen – Service

I had a very good experience with the staff of ibis Cologne Frechen. I felt they were really friendly and helpful.The WiFi in the room felt reliable, but also reached its limit in the morning hours, when many hotel guests obviously woke up in parallel.

 

ibis Cologne Frechen – My View

I really liked my stay at ibis Cologne Frechen. The location is good if you are on the road. The service is very friendly and professional. Before the stay I felt that the place might be rather noisy, but the sound proof of the room is really nice. If you want to explore Cologne, you should be aware of that there are likely better choices, though.
