I already introduced you to Bunk’Art 1, a former nuclear-proof governance bunker in the outskirts of Tirana. The huge area has been turned into an amazing historic museum, which amazingly illustrates the (darker parts of) the history of Albania. Right in the city center, there is the sister bunker and museum, Bunk’Art 2. Similar to the major place, it is a museum hosted in a former atomic bunker. In this review, I take you on a visit.
Bunk’Art 2 – Location & Admission
Bunk’Art 2 is located in the very heart of Tirana, close to the Sheshi Skenderbej (Skanderbeg Square). There are several key attractions of the Albanian capital around and (in contrast to the other bunker) can easily reach this place by public transport. There are also some parking garages around in case you reach the city by car.
The adult admission for the museum is 500 Lek, roughly 4.50 EUR. There is a reduced combined ticket, which is allowing you to visit both Bunk’Art locations. Opening times are 9:30 to 18:00, Monday to Thursday, and 9:30 to 20:00 on the weekend.
Bunk’Art 2 – The Visit
There are two key differences between Bunk’Art 1 and Bunk’Art 2. First of all, Bunk’Art 1 is significantly larger. Even though just parts of the bunkers are accessible, the exhibition space (according to my information) is about three times the size of Bunk’Art 2, which is still amazing 1000 square meters. The two museums also differ in topic. While the first museum focuses on establishing communism in Albania and life in communist times, Bunk’Art 2 is rather focusing on governmental suppression of the population, political persecution and Sigurimi, the former Albanian state security. The museum features 24 rooms, which are documented in Albanian and English.
I have to say that even though I liked Bunk’Art 2, I liked the first museum much more. The range of exhibits is simply much more versatile there (maybe also due to the size). Nonetheless, suppressing the population reminded me a lot of methods in the former German Democratic Republic, so that Bunk’Art 2 was very touching and illustrating to me. Again, there are a lot of pictures, but also very interesting original items, which you can explore during your visit. I spend 40 to 50 minutes in the former bunker next to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Bunk’Art 2 – Services
The staff in the museum was very helpful. Similar to the Bunk’Art 1 experience, there should be WiFi in the bunker, but it did not work out for me. There is a small souvenir store.
Bunk’Art 2 – My View
Bunk’Art 1 is an absolute blast. Thus, Bunk’Art 2 naturally has a tough time to compare to it. It is much easier to get there and the exhibition is indeed interesting. If you don’t have the time to visit the larger Bunk’Art place, this museum is definitely a must-do when visiting Tirana. It is a good place, but not an excellent one.
