Gasadalur and the Mulafossur Waterfall (Pictured Story)

The Faroe Islands are not only the islands of beautiful nature and countless sheep, but also a territory full of beautiful waterfalls. One of the most frequently photographed ones is the Mulafossur. It is located South of the village of the city of Gasadalur. I take you on a road trip there and did a short hike to the waterfall. Here is my Pictured Story.

Gasadalur – Location & Access

Gasadalur is a village in the very West of the island of Vagar. Roughly 20 people are living there. Until 2003, the village was only accessible by boat or helicopter. Then the Gasadalstunnilin (Gasadals Tunnel) was opened and allowed a direct road connection (Gasadalsleid) from Sorvagur to the city. Gasadalur has a guest house, but no services like restaurants, grocery stores or gas stations. These are all located in Sorvagur, which is a 9 km drive away. The distance to Faroe Islands Airport (FAE) is roughly 11km, to the capital Torshavn roughly 56 km. Accessing the island of Vagar requires passing a toll sub-sea tunnel.

Scattered services of the bus line 300 connect Torshavn, the airport, and Sorvagur with Gasadalur.

Drive to Gasadalur

My short road trip, which took about 20 to 25 minutes each way, starts at Sorvagur. After leaving the town, you have some amazing views of the fjord and bay, at which it is located. In the direction of travel, you see the island Mykines, which is known for bird watching, and the iconically shaped Gasholmur Island. In the fjord, you see the typical Faroese salmon farms on the water. As you drive along a steep hill, there are also numerous smaller waterfalls. More athletic visitors can also take a hike to Gasadalur. The road is easy to drive and typically does not require to stop for traffic in the opposite direction, apart from running into trucks and bus services.

The views alongside the short drive are breathtaking – and as you see in the pictures, I also had lovely weather on the outbound drive. The tunnel is a one-laned road with frequent turnout bays. As it is more or less completely straight, you see traffic very early. After the tunnel, there is a serpentine curve and you run into the picturesque small village Gasadalur.

Mulafossur Waterfall

The hike to Mulafossur diverts right from the Gasadalsleid road. It is located some 250m away from a larger car park. The trail head itself just has limited parking in front of a farm, you should (as always) respect the locals’ privacy. The hike is easy and after passing a sheep gate, you already reached the viewpoint. Together with the intense waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the scenery at Mulafossur is breathtaking and can be found on many postcards and calendars.

A short detour allows you to get a bit closer to the waterfall. However, the view is not getting better, you can cross the creek over a small bridge. If you follow the route, you get back into the village. I loved exploring the waterfall from that perspective as well.

Drive Back to Sorvagur

The Gasadalsleid is a dead-end road, so that you do the same road in opposite direction again. Nonetheless, you always have some interesting different perspectives on the way back. I also did a small stop at the village of Bour, which is located next to the road. There is another beautiful waterfall there. During summer, Bour also runs two restaurants.
