Flipturn had great success with their releases so far. Songs like August, released in 2018, come with almost 60 million Spotify streams. Also, their debut album had some very successful tracks. On 24th January 2025, the US-American band is back with their sophomore record, Burnout Days. A review.

Flipturn – About The Artists

Flipturn is an indie-pop-rock band from Fernandina Beach North of Jacksonville in Florida. The US-Americans are doing music since 2015, when they founded the band as high school seniors. Three Flipturn members are founding ones, namely Dillon Basse (vocals), Tristan Duncan (guitar) and Madeline Jarman (bass). The other members of the quintet are Mitch Fountain (guitars, synth) and Devon VonBalson (drums, percussion). Flipturn released three EPs, before they released their debut album Shadowglow in 2022. After a deluxe version of the same album, Burnout Days is their sophomore album.

Flipturn – Burnout Days – Track by Track

The twelve song album runs 44 minutes.

1. Juno

Juno comes with all elements used by the Florida band. The guitar riffs and the rhythmic drums care for the vibes, the synth elements also add a flavor of pop music. The style is definitely indie-alike, but also has a really nice flow. A solid opener.

2. Rodeo Clown

Like the opener, Rodeo Clown has been released by Flipturn before the album already. The song has a stronger pop vibe. This especially leads to a more present and catching melody, which is nicely flowing throughout the listen. Towards the end of the song, there is more distortion and virtuous elements.

3. Inner Wave

Inner Wave is slower and a bit of laid back, coming with nice bass elements and a stronger presence of synth melodies. This all leads to that Dillon Basse’s vocals are very clear in here, which makes them feel really fine and eloquent. Nonetheless, after two stronger songs, the third song is struggling to leave a mark in the listener’s mind.

4. Sunlight

It is hard not to think about Sunlight when it comes to the most lovely melody on Burnout Days. The US-Americans develop the theme in a lovely way and nicely balance between rather quiet and rocking parts. Nice one!

5. Moon Rocks

The shortest song on the album (2:51 minutes) is Moon Rocks. The song works with fast drumming and brief guitar chords. A touch of surf sounds to me, which quickly transform into a very present and melodic chorus. The song does not work for me personally, but adds a different style to Burnout Days.

6. Right?

Right? is the sixth track of Flipturn’s 2025 record. Being one of two songs on the record which exceeds four minutes, it does take time for a slower intro. However, it takes until the second half of the song before there is really some energy. In the context of the whole album, it does not play a strong role. Bad luck, the song feels to have potential.

7. Window

Window is a dreaming, melodically tootling song. The key drivers of the atmosphere of this one is the arrangement – Basse feels to sing without any backing music in a few parts. This intensifies the rather personal and intimate sound of the song. Window definitely has a nice catch.

8. Swim Between Trees

Swim Between Trees reminds me of some of the songs at the beginning of the album. Flipturn feels rather virtuous in here, the song has different sections with slightly different character. The quintet beautifully turns melodies into aura in this one.

9. Tides

The longest song on Burnout Days is Tides, which lasts 4:28 minutes. The song is definitely one of the highlights of the record. It initially feels rather slow and touching, before the rock heart of the US band breaks out and also spreads some guitar power.

10. Reason to Pretend

Reason to Pretend is a nice blending of bassy grooves and catching melodies. The song fits nicely into the context of the record. It does not come with a too new or surprising character, but it is definitely enjoyable.

11. If It Is

The last songs of Burnout Days come with some stronger and more catching moments again. If It Is is a very atmospheric song, which is having some breaks between the different sections. Very nice.

12. Burnout Days

The title track of the album is closing the 2025 by Flipturn. Burnout Days is the final highlight of the album, which again comes with a lovely balance of indie, rock and pop elements. More than that, the melodies written by the band are beautiful.

Flipturn – Burnout Days – My View

Burnout Days is a good album. The band managed to record some really lovely and catching melodies in the pop-rock sphere. Unfortunately, the middle of the album comes with some weaker spots as well, which prevents a better rating.
