Hotel pricing in New York is weird. It is very hard to spot a reasonable place for 250 USD per night or under. What makes it very difficult for travelers, especially from overseas, is that hotel prices typically drop significantly a few days before the desired travel date. Thus, even though I initially scheduled to have two nights in Newark, I finally ended up having two nights in Manhattan on my April 2024 trip following the Pittsburgh Penguins. The hotel I finally opted for was the Hampton Inn Manhattan – Madison Square Garden Area. Here is my review.

Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden Area – Location

The Hampton is a rather lean hotel, which is having 19 floors, but just has a bunch of rooms per floor. This influences the whole architecture and service in the hotel significantly. Therefor, it is located perfectly on 31st St just a block away from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. Another block away is the Amtrak station, Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station.

The Hampton Inn – Madison Square Garden Area is absolutely conveniently located. For example, entering Penn Station or the entrance to Madison Square Garden is just half a block away. The train station does not only offer domestic services, there are also Long Island Railroad nad New Jersey Transit connections from there. You also have multiple NY Subway stations in the area.

Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden Area – Room

I booked a standard room for two nights at the Hampton Inn Manhattan – Madison Square Garden Area. I paid the stay in April 2024 by using Hilton Honors points. Typical rates of the hotel are around 300 USD per night. Breakfast is always included at Hampton Hotels. My room was on the eighth floor, together with seven other rooms. The room was actually quite nicely sized. I had significantly smaller rooms in the Big Apple in previous stays. The layout is quite efficient, with a work desk right next of the bed.

The shower bathroom was fine as well. It at least had sufficient space to store my toiletries. The room was sufficiently cleaned and serviced. Amenities were provided in dispensers, which is especially useful for European travelers. This means that there is shower gel and not a soap for showering – I just don’t get used to that habit, which is still driven by some Hampton hotels in the United States especially.

Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden Area – Breakfast

Breakfast is served on the first floor / ground floor, right behind the reception desk. The first morning was quite chaotic as they had to even block parts of the rather packed breakfast area due to a water damage. This also lead to refilling options. I was rather early on the second morning, where things were solved and worked out much better. The buffet is split into different sections, but you find anything you would expect from that class of Hilton hotel. In peak times, the space around the buffet might be a bit of narrow, though.

Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden Area – Service

Overall, the staff was really kind and helpful. The hotel even drives a small gym. WiFi worked out well. There are two elevators in the hotel, which did lead to a little waiting time here and there, but overall worked out fine.

Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden Area – My View

A very nice location and good services – this already turns the Hampton Inn close to Madison Square Garden to a really nice option in New York City. The cash prices feel ridiculous, but that’s simply Manhattan reality nowadays – you won’t find similar comfort for significantly less money any more (unless you are really lucky). Thus, I was absolutely pleased with my stay.
