The Goldenes Dachl (“Golden Roof”) is regarded to be the most famous and iconic architectural structure of Innsbruck. The palatial oriel has been built in 1500 with fire-gilded copper tiles due to the wedding of Emperor Maximilian and Bianca Maria Sforza. While most visitors enjoy the iconic architecture in the Austrian city, you can also learn more about it in the Goldenes Dachl Museum right inside the same building. I take you there in my review.

Goldenes Dachl Museum – Location & Admission

The Goldenes Dachl and its museum are located in the Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse in the Old Town of Innsbruck. There are numerous other touristic places around, like the palace Hofburg or Innsbruck Cathedral. The Old Town as such is picturesque as well. As the area around is a pedestrian zone, you need to take a few steps to get there. However, Innsbruck city center is compact the distance to tram/bus stations is short. One stop nearby is Museumstraße, which is served by four tram lines and multiple buses. The walking distance to Innsbruck’s Main Station is also reasonable. The museum is in the public building of the Goldenes Dachl – fun fact: you can also marry in that one (on the first floor). The museum is on the second floor.

The museum is opening daily from 10:00 to 17:00. In the winter months October to April, it is closed on Mondays. Adult admission is 5.80 EUR. The admission is included in the Innsbruck Card. There is also a combined ticket with the Innsbruck City Museum as well as that museum and the Stadtturm (City Tower).

Goldenes Dachl Museum – The Visit

The Goldenes Dachl Museum is fully documented in German and English. In addition, you get an audio guide, which is supporting more languages. Furthermore, there are quite some interactive displays, especially in the first part of the exhibition. However, before I visited the exhibition, I visited the famous Goldenes Dachl from “the other side”. You can only look into the balcony and not step on it to preserve the structure. Mirrors help you to explore the paintings, especially those on the top and the sides of the tourist attraction. The view over the Old Town is nice, but overall not that special.

Thereafter, it was time to visit the exhibition part of the museum. There are quite a lot of facts about the history of the building and the stories around it. Of course, there is a lot of focus on the life of Emperor Maximilian I.. Some original items, which have been removed from the Goldenes Dachl, are part of the exhibition as well. The museum is very illustrative and well done. However, it is also very small. It took me about 20 minutes to visit it. Even if you dig deeper into some of the displays, you will do it in 30 minutes.

Goldenes Dachl Museum – My View

The Goldenes Dachl is indeed an iconic place. Watching the oriel from street level should definitely be on your list. If you stroll through the lovely city, enjoying the combination of the historic / historic style buildings and the Alps in the background, you likely walk along there anyway. The museum is mainly for people who want to dig deeply into history. Especially if you have limited time in the city in Tyrol, I would recommend to skip it. Stepping into the Goldenes Dachl would be a nice feature, but I do understand why that is not possible.
