Flyctory.com Pros

  • Amazing views of the seacliffs
  • Great service on land and onboard
  • Relaxed atmosphere

With the Faroe Islands‘ geographical location, it feels like an obvious and natural choice to explore and enjoy the beauty of the territory by sea. One of the most popular places to do so is Vestmanna on the West of the island of Streymoy. In September 2024, I had a cruise from there, offered by the local provider Sjoferdir (or puffin.fo), which is in fact a collaboration of two local ship companies. I took their classic tour, which – in the right season – would have also included some puffin spotting. Let’s take you on the Atlantic Ocean!

Sjorfedir / Puffin.fo Classic Boat Trip – Location & Admission

Apart from the capital of Torshavn, the 1,200 people Vestmanna is the second largest city on Streymoy. It is located on its Western part. From the capital, you head towards the airport and jus before the Vagar Tunnel, head toward route 21. Driving distance is roughly 38 km or 35 minutes and it is an easy drive. The boats leave right at the tourist center at the entrance of town, which is beautifully located in a bay. The tourist center also holds the Vestmanna Saga Museum, which I will feature separately. Free parking is provided nearby. You can also use bus lines 100 and 300 from city center to city center, which run rather frequently and have a scheduled travel time of 55 minutes one way.

There are several trips, including fishing tours and tours to Mykines, offered by Sjorfedir / Puffin.fo. The classic tour is also named Vestmanna Seacliffs – Sightseeing costs 399 DKK (roughly 54 EUR) and lasts two hours. As said, I my trip was already at the end of the bird season, so that this part of the trip was slightly reduced. Due to wind and other weather conditions, the exact route you travel might alter from the one I took. You should book the cruise in advance. Tours may be cancelled when there are too few bookings and others might be sold out. You can review the status on the website of the company. At the time of booking, you can combine your trip with a soup and salad buffet at the restaurant of the tourist center (which I absolutely recommend, 155 DKK) and/or the admission to the Saga Museum.

Sjoferdir / Puffin.fo Classic Boat Trip – The Vessels

There are numerous vessels, which are used for the trips. They have in common that they have an open and a closed deck as well as sanitary facilities. The most common vessels are the Silja Star and the Foroyur, which both have a capacity of 48 people and a top speed of 30 knots. There are plenty more seats and spots on board than the capacity of the boat, so that even in high season, your trip should be rather Faroese, i.e. relaxed. Please be aware of the weather changes on the Faroe Islands and the potentially strong winds when you choose your clothing for your cruise day.

Sjoferdir / Puffin.fo Classic Boat Trip – The Trip

The first highlight of the cruise is leaving the town with its beautiful setting and the lovely, colorful houses. As you see in the pictures, my cruise was at a lovely, sunny day, so that we could enjoy the views of Streymoy and Vagar on the opposite side.

You quickly get into typical Faroese scenery – green rocks, birds and sheep. The highlight of the tour comes closer when the vessel follows the coast of the island in Northern direction. The cliffs are spectacular and there are even some caves the ship can maneuver into. This part of the journey may become slightly stressful as everyone is aiming for the best pictures. However, it was really relaxed during my cruise. Please note that (for most visitors), the boat is indeed the only way to explore this beautiful part of the Faroe Islands. I am not sure whether you could hike there, but there is definitely no road access.

After that experience, it is slowly time to head back to Vestmanna. You in fact go back into the bay. Something like cruising around Vagar would be possible, but simply takes way too much time.

Sjoferdir / Puffin.fo Classic Boat Trip – Service

Apart from the cafe / restaurant with the lovely buffet (and some other offers), the tourist center also drives a very nice souvenir store. The people onboard and in the tourist center were very friendly and helpful. The team onboard the ship explains a lot during the cruise (in English) and was overall really helpful.

Sjoferdir / Puffin.fo Classic Boat Trip – My View

I absolutely loved that trip. Indeed, it is a bit of a lottery in regards of the weather (and I won it) as you likely have to book in advance. The Atlantic Ocean may be a bit of rough, especially when you leave the bay and head along the coastline. The views and the geological structures are breathtaking, though.
