3.1/5

Flyctory.com Pros

  • Some nice new versions of classics

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Too many re-releases
  • Too few really new songs
  • A bit too schlager-alike

No, there is no typo in that album title. The sixth studio album of the legendary German duo Paso Doble is indeed called Libe ist (The correct spelling would be Liebe ist – “Love is”). I was curious about this 13th June 2025 release and had a listen.

Paso Doble – About The Artists

Paso Doble is one of the most iconic bands of the Neue Deutsche Welle era. Named after the Latin-American dance, the duo has been formed in 1983. The duo is married. Frank Oberpichler is the producer, composer and keyboarder of the band, while Rale is the singer. Their most successful song was Computerliebe (Die Module spielen verrückt), which peaked 15th in Germany, but is a very well-known track since today. They have released five albums so far, the latest one being Urknall (with DJKC) in 2021.

Paso Doble – Libe ist – Track by Track

The fourteen song album lasts 45 minutes.

1. Da da da – Album Remaster

Da Da Da is a song, which became famous by Stephan Remmler’s band Trio in 1982. In the opener of Libe ist, Paso Doble move the song into their electro-pop world. A nice listen, but the original feels superior to me.

2. Die Gedanken sind frei – BigMix

Die Gedanken sind frei is a traditional German song, which is likely originated the 18th century already. The song is featured in two versions on the album. The BigMix is thereby rather close to the original, just adding some electronic and melodic twists. Especially the bridge adds some new elements to it. A nice way to modernize this one and push it to the 21st century.

3. Kleine Killer 2020 – Album Mix

The album hosts quite a lot of new versions of songs Paso Doble has released earlier. The Kleine Killer version spreads Neue Deutsche Welle vibes, but also feels very modern. The song originally released in 2006 on the Versunkener Schatz album works well in this modern style as well.

4. Marionetten – Album Mix

Marionetten is one of the best later songs by Paso Doble. It is another 2006 original. Similar to the song before, the updated version works nicely in the new style and still keeps the special and characteristic melodic style.

5. Computerliebe 2024 – Album Remaster

Computerliebe – the Paso Doble classic is coming in two new versions on Libe ist. The chorus stays close to the original and thus spreads the fascination of the 1985 version. The stanzas are using more electronic distortion, though. Overall, the 2024 does not feel like a gap of almost forty years in between, but is a bit too close to its blueprint.

6. Heladila (Nicht im Traum) – Album Mix

The schlager-esque Heladila is one of the few originals of the album. It has been released in late 2023 in a radio version. The song spreads some Neue Deutsche Welle vibes, but does not come with the cheeky energy of songs of that special German pop era in the earlier 1980’s.

7. Love Melody (Vielleicht morgen) – Album Remaster

This song has been released in a radio edit in February 2023 already. The song comes with a nice, harmonic melodic. Especially the chorus feels a bit kitschy – but ain’t that fine for a Love Melody. And: these guys are married for more than forty years – let them enjoy their love musically as well.

8. Es ist (Die Liebe bleibt) – Album Remaster

The beat is getting stronger, you feel like dancing to Paso Doble again. This is Es ist (Die Liebe bleibt) (“It is (Love stays)”). Again, the style of the song leans towards schlager music. This time, especially the simply stanzas are spreading too much plushy emotions. But it is a nice and catching track.

9. Herz an Herz 2025

Not only due to the later cover version by Blümchen in 1995, the 1985 Herz an Herz is one of the key tracks of the Paso Doble discography. Especially the chorus in the 2025 version is still striking and causes nostalgic feelings – with 2020’s vibes.

10. Nicht nur geil – Album Remaster

This track has been released in 2024 in a radio edit. The song feels cool and comes with strong groovy vibes. Thus, there is even some hip hop style in the track. Nicht nur geil definitely attracts attention in the context of that record.

11. Ja ich will (alles oder nichts) – Album Remaster

The basic melody and the lyrics of Ja ich will (alles oder nichts) again feels very soupy and could also be a schlager song. The electronic elements distract from that and rather moves the song into a dance pop direction.

12. Zünd ein Licht an – Kerzenlicht-Mix – Album Remaster

Zünd ein Licht an is a ballad with electro-dance vibes. In this song, I feel that the concept and arrangement of the track works much better than in some of the songs before. The song is in fact a Christmas track.

13. Computerlove – Album Remaster

Computerlove is the English version of Computerliebe. Also the equivalent duration of the song suggests that there is not too much of change between the two versions on Libe ist. It is majorly built on the difference between the two language.  Overall, this one feels being slightly closer to its original, though.

14. Die Gedanken sind frei – Elektropop Mix

The Elektropop Mix of Die Gedanken sind frei is closing the album. This time, the beat is much more in focus of the recording. I feel that this very electronic-focused version of the traditional works well – even though some listeners might feel that the song deviates too much from the original.

Paso Doble – Libe ist – My View

I struggle with Libe ist. The backbone of the album are songs which Paso Doble has released long ago – and again and again. Some of the new tracks work quite well, while others rather feel like fillers in this 14 song setting. If you include all the radio versions released before, there is also not too much new music on this record. Thus, it is rather average to me.

Favorite Song: Es ist (Die Liebe bleibt)
