During my Pittsburgh Penguins trip in February 2025, I had a Contour Airlines flights, based on the Essential Air Service (EAS). While I already introduced you to Parkersburg Airport (PKB) in West Virginia, where my trip started, this posting takes you to Beckley Airport (BKW). The airport in Southern West Virginia was the destination of my trip. It is also named Raleigh County Memorial Airport. Here is my review.

Beckley Airport (BKW) – Location & Transport

Beckley Airport (BKW) is located East of Beckley in West Virginia. The area is a lovely spot, featuring natural sights like the Grandview Main Overlook. There is no public transport connecting to the terminal. However, there are sufficient free parking spots. Driving distance from the center of Beckley is roughly six miles.

Beckley Airport (BKW) – Connections

Regarding commercial passenger flights, Beckley Airport (BKW) is only connected by the EAS program. The state-funded support ensures that the airport is connected to Charlotte (CLT). Contour Airlines served this connection during my visit in one flight starting in Parkersburg (PKB), stopping in Beckley and then heading on to North Carolina. It is possible to fly from Parkersburg (PKB) to Beckley (BKW) and vice versa only, which I did on my trip. In each direction, there are two daily flights on weekdays. Contour Airlines has interline agreements with other carriers like American Airlines. This means that your luggage can be automatically transferred at Charlotte (CLT) for your ongoing connection.

Arriving at Beckley Airport (BKW)

I was the only person leaving the flight from Parkersburg (PKB) at Beckley (BKW). You just take the ramp down the airplane and walk to the terminal. The airport does not have a luggage belt. Checked luggage is delivered to a luggage cart in the terminal instead.

Departing from Beckley Airport (BKW)

The terminal building at Beckley is, as expected, not too large, but overall very nice. There is also a cafe / restaurant, which sells certain souvenirs as well. I was struggling to find a spot to work while waiting for my flight, though.

You can reach the airside part of the terminal only short before the plane is in fact landing. The waiting area is actually quite nice and even features toilets. The security was equipped with new scanners, so that you don’t have to take out your electronics if you are TSApre passenger. Similar to landing, you walk to the plane from the terminal.

Beckley Airport (BKW) – Services

As you saw in the pictures above, there are some rental car companies, which you can use to get away from the airport. There was also a sign with the phone number of the local taxi provider. The staff was very friendly and the airport featured free WiFi. A very unusual “service” by the airport was that there were frequent copies of the bible in the landside part of the terminal. There is – obviously – no lounge or similar service.

Beckley Airport (BKW) – My View

Beckley Airport (BKW) is a nice regional airport. It features all basic services you need as a traveler. The staff was very friendly as well, which made my flights to and from there enjoyable. Of course, it just serves the basic needs, which is absolutely fine for the rather low level of passengers using it (roughly 5,000 passengers during 2023).
