Germany is definitely not the best location to watch some high quality rugby. As I generally like the sports, I headed abroad for an international match on Saturday 8th November 2025. England hosted Fiji at home in the Quilter Nations Series. Fans of the sports know: this means that I visited an absolutely iconic temple of the sports. Here is my review of the stadium experience, watching the English Rugby National Team at their “holy ground”, the Allianz Stadium Twickenham in the outskirts of London.

 

Allianz Stadium Twickenham – Location & Transport

Twickenham is a borough in the Southwest of Greater London. The stadium is located in a park in a rather residential area. South of the Stadium is the A316 (Chertsey Rd). Please note that some roads in the area are closed or limited on matchdays. There is significant traffic already three to four hours before a matchday. Ubers and Taxis typically drop you off at Langhorn Dr, in front of Twickenham Stoop Stadium, home of the Harlequins Rugby Football Club. There are not many pubs or restaurants around the venue. The stadium grounds host one hotel, the Radisson RED London Twickenham, which obviously comes with very high prices on matchdays. Apart from a small guest house, there is no other accommodation in the area.

There is no mass transportation around the stadium. The best options from Central London are the Piccadilly Line to Hounslow Central and the District Line to Richmond, from where there are bus connections. There is also Twickenham railway station which is about 0.8 miles / 1.3 km South of the stadium walking distance. Walking distance to Hounslow Central is about 2 miles / 3.5 km. Allianz Stadium Twickenham also hosts the World Rugby Museum, which I visited before the match. If planes approach London Heathrow (LHR, distance to T4: 6 miles) from the East, they almost fly over the stadium.

 

Getting Out of Twickenham after the Match

While it is a bit of effort getting to Twickenham, it is an absolute nightmare after the match. Some buses are diverted and there is heavy traffic. If you cannot walk to Twickenham station or to Hounslow Central, you need to rely on Uber and rideshare services. It took me about 45 minutes to get a ride away from the stadium (and I felt being rather lucky with that…). Unfortunately, the staff is also not overwhelmingly helpful due to a lack of options. One of the staff members at Langhorn Dr told me that regularly, people try to bribe Uber and other private car hire drivers to cancel their confirmed trip and take them instead.

 

Allianz Stadium Twickenham – The Venue & Ticket Situation

The very first Twickenham stadium has been built in 1907. The current state of the stadium reflects the last renovation completed as of 2008. It has a capacity of 82,000 people for rugby matches. Twickenham Stadium has also been used for American Football (capacity: 75,000) and concerts (55,000) in the past. There are wide grounds around the stadium, so that people can hang out rather early. Confusingly, some of gates were already open during my visit, while others opened later.

There are three levels / ranks in the stadium. I had tickets in the lower ranks. The concourse is not that appealing, but the stadium is an absolute beauty. The stairs in the lower rank are easy to walk, while they feel to be much steeper in the higher ranks. I had an excellent view of the match, the plastic seats were okay with fine seat width and pitch. However, I read in other reviews that other seating options might be rather narrow. Rugby is very popular, so that you should care about tickets early. I applied for a one-year membership which gives you access to presales. The ticket prices are very reasonable.

 

England Rugby at Allianz Stadium Twickenham – Atmosphere

At rugby matches, Allianz Stadium Twickenham is opening the gates rather early and fans can hang out at the British Airways Fan Village. It is a large ground with quite a lot of street food booths and bars on the West side of the stadium. You can even pull your own Guinness at self-service machines. Before the match, the large screen showed the live coverage of another rugby match and switched to live coverage of the match later. There are (obviously) also some games and booths by sponsors and merchandise stands. Fiji is likely not the biggest rivalry for England in rugby, but I was impressed by the friendly, respectful and relaxed atmosphere before and during the match.

A really cool tradition is that once the bus with the English team enters the ground, they walk through the spectators to their locker room. The bus is parking in front of the lockers and VIP entrance thereafter. This shows how close England Rugby is to the people. You could also watch the Fiji players entering their area thereafter.

 

Atmosphere in the Arena

Even though it was a really good match with England beating Fiji by 38-18 in front of 78,678 spectators, I was not that impressed by the atmosphere during the match. It was cool, there were scattered chants, but not a constant support for the home team. Still a great atmosphere, but I expected even more. The pre-game show was really impressing with a light and firework show right before the match. The references to military and fallen soldiers reminded me of US sports events, though.

 

Allianz Stadium Twickenham – Merchandise

Before you enter the stadium, you can visit the large England Rugby merchandise store. I loved that they also had limited merchandise of the away team. Even though it was some two hours before the match and the shop was rather packed, people were very relaxed and friendly in there as well. The prices are reasonable.

 

Allianz Stadium Twickenham – Services

Apart from the post-match trouble I wrote about, the staff in and around the stadium was absolutely friendly and drove a lot of the friendly atmosphere. The distribution of toilets within the stadium is a bit tricky, but absolutely fine for a venue of that size. I loved the food quality and even refueling yourself in the halftime was absolutely fine. At least if you are a foreign visitor (I guess the networks give you low priority), the mobile network as well as the WiFi is poor, unfortunately. I also loved the food quality at the stadium.

 

England Rugby at Allianz Stadium Twickenham – My View

I had an outstanding time at Allianz Stadium Twickenham – until the end of the match. The atmosphere in and around the stadium is lovely, the venue is impressing and it was fun to watch the match. However, I absolutely do not understand the traffic concept (if there is any at all) after the match. Even if you don’t have mass transportation like a tram or subway there, you should have something. I had a leg injury during that time so that walking to Hounslow Central, which is likely the most realistic way of getting away there in the direction of Heathrow, was not an option. With a stadium being located there for more than a century, I just don’t understand how they did not find a way to handle the situation. This is the only factor which makes Twickenham Stadium miss the Top Pick! rating it simply would deserve. Apart from that, the mobile network (or WiFi) should work better for visitors.
