4th October 2024 is a special day for Sarah Darling fans. Not only that this one is Sarah’s 42ns birthday, she is also releasing a new album. I was very curious about Canyon – here is my review.

Sarah Darling – About The Artist

Sarah Ann Darling is an US-American artist born in Des Moines, Iowa, on 4th October 1982. Her first major media appearance was at the TV show The Entertainer. She competed there at the age of 20 and made it to the finals. She went to Nashville, from where she released herd debut album Every Monday Morning in 2008. She released five studio albums so far, the most recent being Wonderland in 2019. Sarah Darling is one of Flyctory.com’s Featured Artists. I covered a couple of times. However, her last stage appearance in Germany was in 2022, when she supported Carly Pearce.

Sarah Darling – Canyon – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 38 minutes.

1. Hippies and Cowboys

Hippies and Cowboys are opening the 2024 Sarah Darling album. The song is a typical track by the artist: a mixture of country and dream-pop, coming with emotional, beautiful lyrics. Her voice is simply a beautiful fit to that sound. I just cannot do other than smiling while listening to these tunes and words, presented in a warm atmosphere.

Hippies and Cowboys
Chasing the wild in the land of the free
Hippies and Cowboys
Ain’t we all somewhere in between
Restless gypsies in the setting sun
Riding away with the best of ’em
Hippies and Cowboys
Takes one to know one

2. Pink Skies

Pink Skies has been one of three songs featured before album release already. The song has a beautiful flow. The song is having a more rhythmic  focus as well, though. Again, it is the combination of a gentle melody, the story of the song and her voice, which creates a magical atmosphere.

3. Good Girl

I think I might leave the good girl home tonight – who would not like to hear that? Sarah Darling is basing the third song of the Canyon album on these words. Yeah I could use a little reckless and wild – it still sounds so gentle, so personal, when she is singing about that.

4. Red Mustang

The fourth track is a rather rhythmic country-pop track. The single release Red Mustang strikes with beautiful, picturesque lyrics. Sarah Darling’s voice is working out well even when the song is a bit more rocking. Nice.

5. Hollywood

After Red Mustang stated Driving down to Malibu, the album has now reached Hollywood. After the positive vibes of the songs before, the song is telling a more troublesome story. Oh heaven what have I got myself into, I should walk away, I should walk away. The song makes you feel the despair. It’s not a glamour story from Los Angeles, but a very intense and catchy listen.

All my Angels tell me
I should stay away
Somehow they always know
I’m looking for a hideaway
Lord Please forgive me
If I lose something good
I had no intention
To be so Hollywood
So Hollywood

6. Staycation

Why don’t we staycation
Getaway right here
Do a little day drinking
Let the world just disappear
I wanna pull you closer
Wanna turn this living room
Into an island view location
Why don’t we staycation

Appreciate what you got at home, having a getaway right here or simply making an oasis in the back yard. That’s what Sarah Darling is asking for in the sixth song of Canyon. A unique song, which is so relatable. It feels simple, but it is simply nicely written.

7. Getting Gone

Getting Gone is a rather groovy track with a jazzy touch from the rhythmic side. It’s again this magical dream country blending, which defining the song. Even though it it is a rather melancholic story.

8. Thing About You

Baby I’ve been around the world
Running with the shadow and the light
Baby it’s true that there ain’t nothing like
The thing about you

The guitars and the drum section is more intense in this song again. Even though Darling slows down the pace for some more emotional moments, the track would be a lovely candidate for a radio airport. So personal, so relatable, but also so good to listen.

9. Silver Linings

Darling shared Silver Linings in late May 2024 with her audience. She is beautifully telling about the other side of the business she is in. I’m so tired of being queen of silver linings, dancing in the rain to hide the tears I’m crying. The struggle of (especially independent) artists has rarely been described in such a touching and amazing way.

10. Crochet Summer

The last four minutes of  Canyon are taken by Crochet Summer. The song is about goold, old memories, comparing your life nowadays with today (I try on who I use to be
And oh It still feels good). A nice way to say farewell from this emotional musical ride.

Sarah Darling – Canyon – My View

Sarah Darling albums are special – and so is Canyon. She has defined her very own way of doing country music. Her angelic voice is taking you through ten stories this time. They are personal, emotional, relatable – and told in a masterful way. This is why I love listening to them. Even though other listeners might add that sometimes she could get a bit more out of her comfort zone.
