Flyctory.com Pros

  • Very versatile album
  • Good guest musicians
  • Excellent storytelling

Lucinda Williams is a frequent guest on Flyctory.com. Her album World’s Gone Wrong is already the fifth one I review on my website. It is her 16th studio album overall, being released on 23rd January 2026.

Lucinda Williams – About The Artist

Lucinda Gayl Williams was born on 26th January 1953. She is an Americana artist from Lake Charles in Louisiana, USA. She won three Grammy Awards in her career. Interestingly, these were given for three different genres, country, contemporary folk and rock. In 2015, her album Down Where the Spirits Meets the Bone became the Album of the Year at the Americana Awards. She is also a member of the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. My most recent review of her was Stories From A Rock’n Roll Heart (2023).

Lucinda Williams – World’s Gone Wrong – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 47 minutes.

1. The World’s Gone Wrong (feat. Brittney Spencer)

The title track of the album has been the only song which has been released before the album itself. It is one of two songs, which Williams recorded together with Brittney Spencer. The song has a rather expected style. A traditional country music basis with roughly rocking guitars. Lucinda’s voice is in focus in here. The lovely storytelling profits from that as well.

2. Something’s Gotta Give (feat. Brittney Spencer)

The title track of the album has been the only song which has been released before the album itself. It is one of two songs, which Williams recorded together with Brittney Spencer. The two singers lead to a certain width in the traditionally rocking track. With its present groove, the song feels to lean towards blues rock rather than a country music track. I love the work by Rob Burger on the Hammond in this song. Overall, Something’s Gotta Give is a really impressing track of this album.

3. Low Life

With the departure of Brittney Spencer, the songs also get a bit shorter as well. The slower song Low Life “solely” lasts 4:24 minutes. The song describes a scene in a bar. The lyrics make you imagine the scenery very precisely. As the instruments are rather in the background (apart from the harmonica), the song beautifully underlines the atmosphere.

Well I guess this is the low life
But it’s where I want to be
This is the low life
Have a hurricane on me

4. How Much Did You Get For Your Soul

Some rock’n’roll vibes occur on World’s Gone Wrong when How Much Did You Get For Your Souls kicks off. The instruments are quite present in here again. Lucinda works with Maureen Murphy as a backing vocalist here, which adds a lot of width to the listen.

5. So Much Trouble In The World (feat. Marvis Staples)

So Much Trouble In The World has been a track I have been looking forward to before writing the review. How would Lucinda Williams transpose the reggae vibes of the Bob Marley original into her musical spheres? There is a lot of groove, the bass (David Sutton) is very present. There are still some Caribbean vibes in this listen, which leads to an interesting listen. Her way of doing the song has an indie touch, but this turns it into an even more interesting listen.

6. Sing Unburied Sing

The second half of the album opens with Sing Unburied Sing. The riffs at the beginning of the song remind of ZZ Top. However, there are more melodic in the song as well. Nonetheless, this one has a very intense touch.

7. Black Tears

Black Tears and Punchline are the longest tracks, both ranging about 5:40 minutes. The melody feels like a blues song, but you spot folk and country music sprinkles in the recording. Another very groovy song. There is no need to hurry, so that the blues elements stay dominant.

8. Punchline

You know it’s a sad, sad, sad sound, when those tears hit the ground – these lyrics from Punchtime illustrate the way the US-American tells her stories – not only on this album. Despite its duration, the song does not feel monotonous.

9. Freedom Speaks

Ain’t there nothing more important these days than freedom? Maybe that has been one motivation to add the song to this album. Maybe the song on World’s Gone Wrong which makes feel you closest to Lucinda Williams.

10. We’ve Come Too Far To Turn Around (feat. Norah Jones)

Another big name in the music industry joins Lucinda Williams for the chucker-out. Norah Jones is definitely a great addition here. The song is rather slow, leaving a strong message with the listener. Lovely final steps in this very nice album!

Lucinda Williams – World’s Gone Wrong – My View

You can simply trust this Americana artist. Again, Lucinda Williams delivers a great album. Moving closer to the blues works out perfectly. The instrumental work is will and the guest musicians also lead to a
