Myrtle Beach in South Carolina is definitely a special place to me. The city on the Atlantic coast is full of mini golf places, which makes me have a great time hanging out there. Additionally, it is also the place where I saw my very first Weird Al Yankovic concert. Thus, I was really happy that I had some time there in late October 2023 again. In this posting, I take you to the place in the city which may of you might visit first when you travel there – Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR).

Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) – Location & Transport

Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) is located West of Myrtle Beach. The runways are more or less limited by US Highway US-17 BUS in the South and US-17 in the North. With a short distance by car, you reach a highway, so that the airport is very conveniently located, even if you don’t want to visit the city directly, but one of the places in the region.

The easiest way to get to or from Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) is by car. For example, I had an excellent rental with Avis during my 2023 stay. There are also two bus lines, one departing from the terminal and one from the airport road. However, the area is widespread and the bus services in the area are not comparable to European cities or major US cities.

Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) – Connections

Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) is an international airport, i.e. it does feature all necessary infrastructure to handle flights abroad. However, at the time of writing, there is not a single border-crossing services. Nonetheless, the range of destinations within the United States is not bad at all. The website states that over 50 airports are connected with nonstop flights. These include major hubs (like Washington IAD by United, or Minneapolis St. Paul MSP by Delta), but also rather exotic flights.

For example, you have direct connections to New Haven (HVN) by Avelo Airlines, Latrobe PA (LBE) by Spirit or Long Island (ISP) by Frontier. Overall: Myrtle Beach is a holiday destination – and people love to travel there. There is quite a bunch of low-cost airlines, which take the majority of the travel volume.

Arriving at Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR)

I had American Airlines flights (operated by Republic Airways) from New York City. Both flight tickets had a transfer at Washington Reagan Airport (DCA). The flights operated from jetbridge positions. The airport is rather compact. Thus, even though we arrived at a rather outer gate, the walk to street level of the airport, where the luggage belts are located, was rather short. The arrivals hall is designed very friendly and colorful. There is also a touristic information desk in that area. The rental car facility is located right across the arrivals area. Waiting time for the luggage was rather limited.

Departing from Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR)

My flights were in fall, so that the terminal was rather empty. The people were very friendly, services were rather effective. The TSAPre security check was really smooth. However, in summer peak times, I saw that especially standard security may take a while. The terminal felt really spacious – this may also change in summer time, though.

After security, you can go to one of the two concourses. As said, the airport is rather small, so that you can reach any service very easily. There is quite a nice range of cafes and restaurants, especially regarding the airport size. One thing I really liked is that the general layout is very friendly and colorful. For example, you can watch the runway of the airport from wooden lounge chairs. Thus, waiting for the flight was a rather relaxed experience.

Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) – Services

There are no lounges or similar facilities at Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR). The airport does provide free WiFi.

Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR) – My View

I really like Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR). The connections are interesting and the services are efficient and nice. Most of all, I liked the very friendly design of the airport, which made me smile. Thus, I feel it is a good place to fly to and from.
