During our visit to Dubrovnik, my wife and I also had a look into the Franciscan Monastery (sometimes also: Franciscan Friary, Franjevaxki samostan). As photography is only allowed in the patio of the building, I felt sharing this place in one of my Pictured Stoires. Hope you enjoy that trip.
Franciscan Monastery – Location & Admission
The monastery is located right behind the West Old Town Gate or Pile Gate. You can easily combine with a walk through Old Town Dubrovnik. To get there, the easiest way is to take one of the public buses stopping at Brsale utj.
During the peak season, the museum is opening daily from 9:00 to 18:00. In winter time, they are closing at 14:00 already. Admission to the patio is free. The museum does require an admission, which I unfortunately cannot reconcile any more. We used the Dubrovnik Pass, which includes all major sights in Old Town.
Impressions of the Franciscan Monastery
The roots of the friary date back to the 13th century. However, the building was destroyed by the earthquake in 1667. Only one portal is remaining of that time. Most of the friary as you visit it nowadays is dated as of the 17th and 18th century. It is lovely to walk in and around the patio, as you see in the pictures below.
There are a lot of paintings on the wall. In addition, we loved the sculptures all around. Especially in summer, the patio is lovely. Not only the views from there have postcard style, there are even oranges growing in this open space. The friary is still in use today, you see some monks from a distance in one of the pictures above.
Franciscan Monastery – Museums
The Franciscan Monastery includes two museum-alike exhibitions. The museum of the monastery itself is included in the Dubrovnik Pass (which already compensates if you walk the historic city walls). In addition, there is the historic pharmacy. Unfortunately, both parts do not allow photography.
