TSV Bayer Dormagen – Eulen Ludwigshafen 25-30 (14-13)

Just two weeks after I had headed to the TSV Bayer Sportscenter for the match against TuSEM Essen, I had another coverage of TSV Bayer Dormagen. In the 2nd Handball Bundesliga (Men), they faced the Eulen Ludwigshafen. After Dormagen had beaten Essen in the regional battle, they also had a rather surprising victory at DHfK Leipzig. Thus, they likely had quite some momentum and spirit against the guest from Southern Rheinland-Palatinate state, who so far just had won one out of five matches in the season.

This posting comes with a section of 374 major size pictures in the sports galleries.

TSV Bayer Dormagen – Eulen Ludwigshafen – Match Report

After a few failed attacks, the match started at full speed. The first minutes featured ping-pong handball – fast attacks with the match forth and back. Ludwigshafen was better in that game, so that they had a rather early 5-3 lead (Sebastian Bösing, 7th). In the following minutes, Dormagen felt to get better into the game, but Ludwigshafen found the right answers and preserved the lead. The guests even once lead by three goals (6-9, Bösing, 14th), but Bayer came back and tied the score in the 19th minute (Luca Krist, 19th, 10-10).

The match became more nervous, the teams also struggled with some decisions by the referees. This felt being beneficial for the Rheinland team. In the 26th minute, Moritz Köster gave Dormagen a two goal lead for the first time (14-12, 26th). In the last minutes of the period, there was only one goal by Marc-Robin Eisel (27th), so that the score was really close, 14-13, after 30 minutes.

Bad Times for the home team at TSV Sportcenter

The hectic style at the end of the first period. Again, the hosts felt adopt better to it. By a penalty throw, Felix Elias Böckenholt increased the lead to three goals in the 34th minute (16-13). However, it was also part of the story of the second half that Dormagen did too many mistakes in their offense. Just some two and a half minute later, Monty Kleinsteuber tied to a 16-16 score The next minutes were rather a low scoring period, Finn-Lukas Leun gave back the Eulen (“Owls”) the lead in the 42nd minute (18-19).

After that, Dormagen never lead the score again. Ludwigshafen increased the lead, Dormagen came back – but right when they had the chance to push for a thrilling finale of the match, they failed. Two goals by Ludwigshafen’s Friedrich Schmitt within ten seconds in the 52nd minute felt to be the most characteristic situation of the match. In between, Dormagen had allowed a too easy turnover. The enthusiastic away fans pushed their team now. Finally, Ludwigshafen converted their chances and profited from Bayer’s struggle on both sides, defense and offense. With some more than three minutes left on the clock, the guests already lead by six goals. The match was decided – and finally ended 25-30.

TSV Bayer Dormagen – Eulen Ludwigshafen – My View of the Match

The match had quite some mistakes, both offensive lines managed to create major gaps in the opponent’s defense. While the first half was a real thriller with leads for both teams, Ludwigshafen were simply straighter and more consistent in scoring in the second half. Towards the end of the match, this match must have felt for Dormagen like one of these days in sports, when you fail whatever you try. Bad luck for them that they could not built on the momentum of the Leipzig match. For the guests, though, the well-deserved victory was definitely a very valuable two point gain in the 2nd Bundesliga table.
