  • Comparably large lounge
  • Nice design
  • Nice selection of drinks and snacks

While in Vienna in January 2025, I did a bit of travel nerd things. Among other rail experiences, I was really keen on having a look at the Austrian Rail Lounge at Vienna Main Station (ÖBB Lounge WIen Hauptbahnhof). Being located in Austria’s most important train station, I felt that this might be a really interesting experience. I was also keen to have a look how the place is comparing to the ÖBB Lounge in Innsbruck I have shared with you before. Here is my review.

ÖBB Lounge Vienna Main Station – Location & Access

The lounge driven by Austrian National Rail ÖBB is located on the upper floor of the Northern passageway, right on top of a small food court-alike area. The staircase and elevator to the upper level and the lounge is located between the self-service desks of two restaurants.

Access to the Austrian Rail Lounges is rather complex. The most straight-forward way is having an Austrian First Class or an international First Class ticket with a value of over 15 EUR. Nightjet Sleeper Car tickets also allow you to enter the lounge. There are also some network tickets, which allow you to enter the lounge directly. However, ÖBB is part of the Railteam alliance and also accepts partner cards. For example, the German bahn.bonus Gold or Silver status and a rail ticket, you may enter the lounge. Same applies for certain customers of the Hungarian rail network.

ÖBB Lounge Vienna Main Station – Atmosphere

The overall design and style of the lounge is quite much in line with the lounge I visited in Innsbruck. Of course, the lounge is significantly bigger. I could imagine, though, that the place is rather packed in peak times. I visited the ÖBB Lounge around noon and it was already difficult to do pictures without the faces of customers. One feature I especially like is the series of screens on one wall which is displaying the Austrian mountains. There are also two train information displays. Power outlets are located underneath the seats. Overall, I would assume that the lounge is still quite comfortable with some 70 to 80 people inside, which is not too bad. One edge of the lounge also features barstool seats which workdesks. As the small tables in the lounge are movable, I preferred the cozy grey benches, though

ÖBB Lounge Vienna Main Station – Food & Drink

Close to the reception desk, there is the buffet for drinks and snacks. Austrian rail is significantly superior compared to their German peer Deutsche Bahn in that discipline. There is a nice selection of non-alcoholic hot and cold drinks.  Furthermore, ÖBB also offered some basic snacks and fruit on the food side. Regarding that you typically don’t spend that much time in a rail lounge, this is really a nice selection.

ÖBB Lounge Vienna Main Station – Services

The staff was friendly and welcoming. Internet connection via WiFi is provided by the train station and reliable. The ÖBB Lounge also offers toilets, which were clean and very well maintained. There was cleaning staff available throughout my visit.

ÖBB Lounge Vienna Main Station – My View

ÖBB is indeed offering a nice place to relax before or after a train ride. The atmosphere and design is really nice, the services are above most of their European peers. I really loved hanging out there.
