I really like the German band Drei Meter Feldweg. I featured their album Durak in 2022 and also featured them a couple of times in my Songs of the Week. On 28th March 2025, they release their fifth studio album overall. Here is my review of Gut Holz (literally “Good Wood”, in fact a greeting at German nine-pin bowling).
Drei Meter Feldweg – About The Artists
Drei Meter Feldweg is a German punk-rock band, which has been founded in Salzhausen in Northern Germany in 2011. They currently consist of of Bennet Ramm (vocals), Hendrik Petersen, Finn Opeldus (both guitar), Simon Müller (bass) and Philip Hellmig (drums). So far, they have released four albums and three EPs. Their latest album, the 2022 Durak, is the first one which made it to the German album charts.
Drei Meter Feldweg – Gut Holz – Track by Track
The thirteen track album lasts 37 minutes.
1. KGLVRN
KGLVRN stands for Kegelverein (“Bowling Club”), a typical way of playing German nine-pin bowling. Not too rarely, there is not that much of a sports, but a social (and drinking) focus. That’s exactly what Drei Meter Feldweg are pointing out in their 58 second intro track as well.
2. Scheißegal
After this short intro, Gut Holz is kicking off with Scheißegal (“What the Hell!”). The song is about situations, which make you struggle – a failed love, trouble at work or simply no beer in the fridge. Drei Meter Feldweg’s message is clear: don’t care too much and be optimistic. They do it in their typical style: rocking, a touch of irony and a cool party sound. The first full song of the album makes me smile.
3. Wolken im Paradies
According to the song title of the third track of the record, there are “Clouds in Paradise”. The song deals with darker and less optimistic thoughts about the future. Das ist die neue Zeit von morgen (“That’s the new time of tomorrow”) – the punk-rockers are doing a social-critic song in style.
4. Irgendwo anders
Hauptsache, wir sind irgendwo anders (“The main point is that we are somewhere else”) – the fourth song nicely connects to the predecessor. However, the song is rather about breaking out and just being “somewhere else”, far away from the sorrows and problems. Thus, this fourth song is also nicely made to party with with quintet.
5. Keine Worte
The fifth song starts with a monotonous vocal intro, before Drei Meter Feldweg take out their guitars and go for full rock power. The song about the end of a relationship is coming with the typical energy of the German punk-rockers. A song which many listeners will be able to relate to.
6. Fünf kleine Kakteen
The sixth song is the rather short, two minute Fünf kleine Kakteen (“Five small cacti”). The song reflects the end of a relationship. Despite the duration, the song with its lovely stye definitely leaves a strong mark.
Denn, alles was von Dir blieb
Sind fünf kleine Kakteen
Sie stehen auf dem Regal
Und ich will sie sterben sehen
Alles ist verschwunden,
nur die dummen Pflanzen sind noch da.
Ich will, dass sie vertrocknen
Doch sie leben Jahr für Jahr.
(“All what is left of you
Are five small cacti
They are standing on the cupboard
And I want to see them dying
Everythng is gone,
Only the silly plants are still there.
I want them to dry out
But they live year after year”)
7. Am Anfang gut
Starting a new life, from a new flat to new clothing and friends – that’s what this song is about. And it is criticizing consuming too much. Drei Meter Feldweg state Es ist alles nur am Anfang gut (“Everything is good just at the beginning”). The song is rather calm and states that you finally can’t run away from what you are. A really nice write.
8. Nichts für ewig
The eighth song on Gut Holz is about old friendships, youth memories. Denn Zeiger drehen sich weiter und die Träume werden blasser (“Because hands are turning on and dreams are fading”). The band asks Ist das die beste Zeit, die sich dem Ende neigt (“Is that the best time, which is coming to an end?”). A song, which is nicely written and made to party with the band on their upcoming shows.
9. Krokodilstränen
The title of the ninth track translates to “Crocodile Tears”. The song refers to a person who feels to change the world, but being more and more isolated. In fact, the song is a critcal song about the right-wing movement in German politics. Drei Meter Feldweg deal with this topic with very good songwriting and an energetic sound.
10. Alle deine Bilder
The single release Alle deine Bilder is about an easier topic. The song is about nowadays social media culture and its negative impacts. Ich kenne alle Deine Bilder – “I know all of your pictures”. The song is more rhythmic and less rocking than other songs in here in the stanzas. Therefor, the punk rock sound in the chorus feels even more energetic.
11. Chaos
Despite a very structured life, there is Chaos in your head. This is what the eleventh song of the album is about. It is a nice one, but I feel that other tracks in here work out better.
12. Letzter Tanz
The “Last Dance” on Gut Holz is a less than two minute one. The song is about a reunion with old friends, which is slowly coming to an end. Due to its speedy style, the song does not feel that short. Especially the chorus has a lot of potential to drive the masses in upcoming shows.
13. Neue Single
The closing track of Gut Holz has been my Song of the Week as of 21st June 2024. Finally, Drei Meter Feldweg is illustrating their view on the music industry and the pressure on them. They do it in excellent style.

I really like Gut Holz. The album is a lot of fun, the songwriting is smart and the band spreads a lot of energy. I feel that their music will be even better when they are live on stage. Thumbs up for them.
