Doing some shopping (including the local sweets outlets) and visiting the Drielandenpunt, where Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands meet, I recently had a night in Aachen in the very West of Germany. As there is a quite new Hilton Group outlet, the choice of overnight was a relatively easy one for me. Here is my view of the Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli.

Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli – Location

The hotel is located right South of the Tivoli, the 33000 spectator home stadium of local soccer club Alemannia Aachen. The stadium of the world-famous CHIO horse sports event is right next to it. Apart from these local attractions, there are majorly commercial buildings (including a couple of supermarkets) along the Krefelder Strasse main road. The area behind the hotel is residential.

Due to the location, the hotel is rather North of Aachen city center. The walking distance to Aachen Cathedral, for example, is some two kilometers. There is a bus serving the connection. Alternatively, if you come by car, the hotel drives a parking garage. The access to the garage is weird, as it is located underneath a residential building behind the hotel. Even worse, the parking garage is extremely narrow at some points. I would not enter it with a major size rental car I am not used to. The hotel allowed some guests to park in front of the reception – but that felt very random (as a Hilton Diamond member, I had to use the garage). The nightly parking fee is 10 EUR.

Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli – The Room

I booked a standard guest room in March 2022. The rate at the Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli from Friday to Saturday, flexible cancellation, was 71.20 EUR. The hotel still felt very new and the room had the typical European Hampton design. I especially like the large work desk. You also have TV, coffee/tea making facilities, a safe and a sufficient number of power outlets.

The bathroom (with shower only) leads to similar thoughts: if you saw my recent European Hampton reviews, e.g. the outlets Stuttgart City Centre, Munich City Center East or Dusseldorf City Centre, you know the style. The bathroom had a nice size, amenities in dispensers and – like the whole roo – it was absolutely clean.

Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli – Breakfast

The breakfast area is located in the rear of the the beautiful hotel bar and lobby area. I liked that they had a nice range of different seating options. The breakfast buffet actually had a very nice range of dishes, more than you could expect in a Hampton. However, the service was rather poor: the lady who did the breakfast service also had to prepare one of the meeting rooms for a seminar. For that reason, for example, the waffle machine was running, but there was no dough. I could not even ask someone for some 30 minutes, as nobody was around. This was especially critical as the two guys at the reception talked gossip all the time and did not help her.

Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli – Services

Check-in and check-out at the Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli went quite smoothly, even though the friendliness was just upper average in German relations. The hotel drives a nice, well-equipped gym. Working in the room went very smooth due to a very good WiFi connection.

Hampton by Hilton Aachen Tivoli – My View

Due to the proximity to the stadiums and businesses, the hotel is rather suitable for professional travelers as well as for sports fans. The location is not ideal for tourists who want to explore the historic attractions. Apart from this fact, which does not influence my rating, I just felt that the behavior of the staff at breakfast was not appropriate. More than that, the parking garage just comes with a ridiculous layout – which unfortunately further limits the group of people I would recommend the place to. Sounds very critical, but of course, the Hampton in Aachen is a good place with an excellent breakfast selection as such. But the downsides just makes it move out of the Top Pick! ratings.
