Flyctory.com Pros

  • Nice indie-rock songs
  • Straight, partially hilarious storytelling

I did not know anything about Durry when I featured them in the September 2023 review of their album Legend. Now, the US-American band is more familiar to me and I look forward to listening to their music again. Here is my review of This Music Sucks, released on 27th June 2025.

Durry – About The Artist

Durry is the surname of the two siblings, Austin and Taryn Durry. The founded the indie-rock project in Burnsville, Minnesota in 2020. For gigs, they are joined by Ashley Durry (bass) and Dane Hoppe (drums). Especially their song Who’s Laughing Now (2021) boosted their popularity. Legend has been their debut album. This Movie Sucks is their sophomore record.

Durry – This Movie Sucks – Track by Track

The twelve song album lasts 37 minutes.

1. Bully

The siblings kick off the album will full energy. The opener Bully deals with the desire for fitness and not being big driven by the internet. Thereby, they demand to bully the bully. A fast and nice-to-listen-to opener.

Everybody’s fighting
on the internet again
No one’s even trying anymore
Nobody wants to be be the bigger man

2. Monopoly Money

Monopoly Money continues with a similar style. Durry are fast, rough, straight – and awkward in a positive sense. They express what they feel is wrong in clear words. The guitar are at full force, the drummer might need a short break after this less than three minute indie-rock rocket as well.

3. This Movie Sucks

The title track of the album starts slow with a melancholic touch. The song is much more personal than the title might suggest. The song stays rather calm, but therefore burns its fuel in the rocking chorus.

My life is a movie, that I don’t wanna watch
A homemade horror flick on VHS
Why pretend that anybody gets a sequel
And a happy ever after in the end

4. Porcupine

Don’t you agree that Porcupines are too rarely reflected in music? Durry is working against that in the fourth song. Of course, the song deals with current social structures and the siblings’ own life. Already the first line states If life’s a zoo then we’re the baboons. Later, they add Cause I’ve been domesticated and I hate the way I’m foaming at the mouth. This overall leads to a funny indie-rocker, which is also very suitable for on-stage appearances.

5. More Dumb

Some people pray for health, others for wealth. In the fifth song of This Movie Sucks, Durry simply ask I wish I could get a little more dumb. The feature single of the album is in the mid-tempo range. It majorly strikes with the hilarious way the duo is teling their stories and turning them into music. I like that!

6. Start a Band

Hmm, haven’t Austin and Taryn already started a band? At least they care about that topic in this rather short song, which is heading back to their straight, fast rock style, which even feels a bit like punk. And, of course, there is some special touch in the lyrics. I simply had to smile while writing the review.

I can’t play
but I’m starting a band
I can’t sing
but I’m starting a band
I can’t drive
but I’m starting a band
I don’t know why
but I’m starting a band

7. Wannabe

Wannabe is a very melodic and gentle episode of the album. The strumming guitars even have some slight folk rock vibes. The vocals work out very nicely in here, including the backing one. I enjoy listening to songs like this one as well.

8. Polaroid

Is the smile we show on a Polaroid always real and truthful. Durry has a clear thought about it and put that into the eighth song of the record. You can guess their thought, I feel… And I add that they did it in their very own, very enjoyable style.

9. idk i just work here

Maybe I’ll win the lottery
Buy myself a lobotomy
Scoop out my brains and maybe then
I’ll blend right in with management
Pretty, rich or talented
You need two to make it
I guess I’ll just pledge Allegiance
To the paycheck

The employer’s struggle is illustrated in this single release. The song has some speedy and more rocking passages, but focuses on Austin’s voice in the stanzas. Nice one.

10. Good Grief

The following three minutes are dedicated to Good Grief. Right at the beginning, Durry shock with Death is in the doorway with flowers and champagne. In the chorus, they state But I just hope that you’ll remember my songs the day that I’m gone. One of the most fluent songs of the album, which is a treat for indie-rock fans.

11. The Long Goodbye

The Long Goodbye lasts 3:30 minutes and is thus indeed one of the longer songs of the album. The song does not need too much more than the acoustic guitar and the voice of both members of Durry. Stating that life is nothing but a long goodbye does not feel too optimistic, but the song is a really nice one.

12. Slug Bug

A strumming guitar and the harmonica open for the chucker-out. Soon, drums and the lead guitar join in. They are the good-fit foundation for this rock track. Durry closes the album with style.

Durry – This Movie Sucks – My View

Not just due to the title, Durry made me smile. I like the way they set up their songs and tell their stories. I had a lot of fun with it. Thus, I hope it is a fine listen for you as well.

Favorite Song: Good Grief
