Germany is famous for its car manufacturers. With Porsche and Mercedes, Stuttgart is likely one of the key cities car fans think about when it comes to German cars. While I already introduced you to the Porsche Museum, I just did not make it completing my view on the Mercedes-Benz Museum in town as well. I now finally made it and visit with you the world of the world famous car brand with the star.

 

Mercedes-Benz Museum – Location & Admission

The museum is located at the edge of the NeckarPark at Neckar River. There are multiple venues close to it, including Porsche Arena, Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle (both indoor venues) and MHP Arena Stuttgart (soccer). Underground lines U11 and U19 take you to NeckarPark (Stadion) station. From there, it is either a some ten minute walk or you can opt for bus 45 (Mercedes-Benz Welt). Alternatively, S-Bahn commuter rail lines take you to Neckarpark rail station. Due to the wide range of venues, there are several parking options in the area. However, during soccer matches, access to the area by car may be very limited.

The museum is opening from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 18:00. I would at least recommend to go for two hours, better three hours of visiting time. The museum does not allow you to enter from one hour before closing. Adult admission is 16 Euro.

Mercedes-Benz Museum – The Visit

From the entrance, you first take the elevator to the top of the museum. By going further down on the main route, you chronologically follow the history of the company The exhibition is documented in German and in English. This also means that you first run into the most historic car models (which might mean for some visitors that you see the highlights first).

Spiral walkways take you down level by level. While the walkways often illustrate historic facts, these platforms typically host the majority of cars. However, there are also interactive exhibits, motors and other items related to Mercedes-Benz. Also other vehicles and engines illustrating the story of the franchise, e.g. plane engines, can be found in the museum.

As you see in the pictures, there is a vast collection of cars at Mercedes-Benz Museum. The presentation is very modern and posh. Sometimes, it even felt a bit too posh to me – but I guess that it is part of the marketing message this place shall send to the visitors. Towards the end of your visit on this route, you also run into some special topics like racing cars.

 

Alternative Route

A very interesting part of the design of the museum is that you can also take an alternative route down (or switch forth and back from the normal route). While the main route is chronological, this way of exploring Mercedes-Benz Museum takes you through different topics. For example, you run into the Galerie der Reisen (“Gallery of Travel”), where you also find quite some buses. One of the key exhibits here is the original bus of the 1954 German Soccer World Champion National Team. Other galleries feature emergency and helper vehicles, for example.

 

 

Mercedes-Benz Museum – Service

The basement floor of the museum comes with various services. First of all, there is a souvenir store. There is also some interactive entertainment like a giant table soccer table. On top of that, there is even a full Mercedes car dealer. As I visited on a Sunday, the option to buy a car immediately was not available to me, though.

 

Mercedes-Benz Museum – My View

The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart is huge. It is a magnificient illustration of the rich history of the car manufacturer. The design is wise and there is a lot to see and learn. If you are in the Southern German city, this one should be on your bucket list.
