Mascalero Ranger, the sophomore album by Reverend Stomp, was originally scheduled for late 2025. Finally, the Austrian band shared the record on 30th January 2026. Here is my review.

Reverend Stomp – About The Artists

Reverend Stomp is an Austrian garage rock and blues rock band from Vienna. They have been founded in 2022. The band members are Christoph Mooser (vocals, guitar), Florian Strober (drums), Tobias Voges (bass), and Franz Gries (guitar). In 2022, they released their debut album Mokara. Their first EPSalaya, has been released in 2023.

Reverend Stomp – Mescalero Ranger – Track by Track

The eleven song album lasts 42 minutes.

1. Honeymoon Is Over

Reverend Stomp themselves call their musical style Stomp Surf. Already the opener Honeymoon illustrates that definition. The groove of blues rock, the rocking sound of garage rock and the ease of surf pop and rock and leading to a rather characteristic sound. A I really enjoy this nice blending.

2. Keep Going

Mescalero Ranger starts with two already released songs. The second one is Keep Going, which having even stronger surf music vibes than the opener. The guitars and bass lead to a really nice and convincing sound. The song is not that present, especially the vocals feel to slightly hide behind the instruments. However, the more you listen to this song, the more it catches you.

3. Hydra

The first previously unreleased song is Hydra. Mooser’s voice feels a bit rougher, more dirty. Despite of the darker and slightly melancholic style, the song keeps that strong surf music reference. More virtuous and experimental, this song leads to a convincing and catching sound.

4. Gotta See It Through

The style of Hydra feels to continue with Gotta See It Through. The fourth track of Mescalero Ranger has a nicer flow, though.

5. Rest For My Bones

Rest For My Bones is a longer track on the album. The song lasts 4:37 minutes. Overall, it is rather on the melancholic. The garage-alike elements on the guitar side feel like a perfect fit for that. No summer feelings with surf vibes, but the song strikes with a catching vocal performance, which is in the core of it.

6. Oh Boy

After the rather long song, Oh Boy is the shortest listen on the record. It solely starts with a strumming guitar and the voice of the band’s lead singer. Even though, there are some additional elements later, this leads to singer-songwriter vibes. The mood stays rather melancholic. A nice element are the backing vocals in the second half of the song.

7. Stormy Weathers

Two already released follow next. The seventh song of the Austrian’s sophomore release is Stormy Weathers. Similarly to the predecessor, it starts with some guitar strums and vocals. However, the electric guitar and other instruments join in rather soon, which leads to a nice plot of this song.

8. Mescalero Ranger

The following some four minutes are taken by the title track of the record. The surf vibes are significantly more present again at Mescalero Ranger. However, this also applies to the bluesy groove. The chorus comes with a nice melody.

9. Strange Waters

Six minutes – Strange Waters is the epic highlight of this album. The gentle flow of this flow leads to a very enjoyable listen. The song comes with a nice leverage of instrumental and narrative elements and does bring up some new ideas here and then, so that it is definitely not a lengthy listen.

10. Rambling Rogue

Rambling Rogue is very hard to describe. It feels like a blues rock song, but the fast rhythm in the background add a very different touch to it. I really like that blend, which makes me move to the sound of the drums and bass.

11. Leaves

The album closes with Leaves. The song is a thoughtful, deeper ballad-style chucker-out. It feel like a good fit to the album and adds an additional emotional level to it. Nice one!
