The Wiener Staatsoper (“Vienna Sate Opera”) is one of the most iconic concert and opera places of the world. While I did not go for an opera performance, I at least visited the venue as one of their guided tours. Let’s take you to the temple of music in the Austrian capital in my review.

Vienna State Opera – Location & Admission

The Vienna State Opera is located a the South of the very central part of the city. There are numerous attractions in very short distance, including the Hofburg, and Cafe Sacher, which is just opposite of the road. Public transport is very close. The tram lines 1, 2, 71, D stop at Oper, Karlsplatz U South of the building. The closest underground stop is Karlsplatz, from where U1, U2, and U4 operate.  There is also a city bus service, 2A, which stops at Körtner Straße.

You should pre-book a guided tour when you want to the opera house. Apart from German, there are guided tours in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, as well as dedicated tours for kids. Apart from the latter one, the tour is 15 EUR for adults and typically runs some 40 minutes. During peak season, there are multiple tours in parallel at the same time slot. Thus, you should arrive at least 15 minutes earlier so that you can be assigned to the right group. The tour is not suitable for people with mobility limitations. I visited the English tour.

Vienna State Opera – The Visit

I had the tour in summer 2024, with multiple groups in parallel at the same time. The coordination was excellent. This also meant that the order in which I visited the different places of the opera may be significantly different from the order you might explore during your visit. One of the most impressing places is the rich decorated foyer. The Stiegenhaus is the meeting place for the traditional Vienna Opera Ball.

Of course, another highlight of your visit is the auditorium, which you enter in different positions. The view from the upper ranks is amazing. Our guide was great and told the stories of the building with a lot of enthusiasm. He also reacted on questions very well and could tell a lot of background information on demand. Major parts which have been destroyed during WWII. The wing which is designed in post-war architecture is quite a contrast, but also tells some of the things the building has in stock. In between visiting the upper and lower rank, our tour also lead as to the Tea Hall (Teesalon), which is another impressing place in the amazing building. You cannot visit the stage, though.

Vienna State Opera  – Services

At the end of the tour, you can relax at the luxurious cafe and bar. Before you leave, you of course have to pass the souvenir store, which is having a nice range of items about the city of Vienna and the venue itself.

Vienna State Opera – My View

Of course, having a guided tour of the Vienna State Opera is only the second best option. Having an opera or a concert in there is the more impressing experience. However, if you are not into the style of music performed there or simply don’t want to bring your fine clothing to your Vienna city trip, it is a great way to explore the venue. The tour is short, but gives you a great overview of the house. The guide was amazing and made a lot of the good experience. Overall, I absolutely recommend this place. Book your tickets early as they are very popular!
