SSF Dragons Bonn – DJK Holzbüttgen – Match Report

Holzbüttgen even came with a fan coach to Bonn, so that a good atmosphere in front of over 300 spectators was almost guaranteed. Nonetheless, there was a lot of fair play and many serious incidents. Bonn even allowed the guests bringing their own speaker for the Starting Six. He was also likely the best Holzbüttgen action before the first intermission. The match was intense from the very beginning and the agile Adrian Stein scored the first goal of the match after a lovely fast break. Even though Holzbüttgen had a few scoring chances, this first period of that afternoon in Bonn was not too glorious.

The league’s top scorer Florian Weißkirchen increased his teams score count to two in the twelfth period. In a fast break, Mikael Mähönen had to stop a Bonn player with a foul, which lead to the first bench penalty of the match. It took Janos Bröker just twenty seconds to find the gap in Holzbüttgens box to kick off the home team goal jingle for the third time of the match. There were some discussions, but I believe the ball did pass the goal line. The icing on the cake of this first period of the Dragons was Stein’s second goal of the match. After a nice offensive play and a good pass by Elias Stein made the Dragons lead by 4-0 (18th).

Holzbüttgen Closes Up in the Second Period

Holzbüttgen had to change their match plan for the second period. While there were quite a lot of turnovers in the first period, they now played much better and precise. The very experienced Dennis Schiffer scored the first goal for his team. It took a bit to increase the faith but then played better and better. In the 10 minute Mähönen scored the second goal for the guests who now felt to be on fire. Hofferbert even closed up to 4-3, but a minor penalty against Lass Vallema (14th) slowed them down a bit. Nonetheless, you definitely could root for  an interesting last period

A Silly Bonn Bench Penalty lead to the Tie

The key moment of the third period was already at its very beginning. Levin Leyhe was not quick enough for a substitution after one minute. Even more unlucky, he stopped the ball with his foot and thus went straight to the sin bin (incorrect substitution). That was the chance for the team from Kaarst to tie the score. When Krystof Manour played a nice long pass to the right wing, Bonn’s goalie Kristaps Novikovs was by far too slow and gave Juuso Ylinen practically an empty net – the score was tied (3rd).

The two main actors in the remainng period were the netminders, Novikovs and Jan Saurbier, who gave their teams stability. Despite some good chances, there was no more goal, so that the amazing crowd could enjoy the ten minute overtime.

Overtime Drama in Bonn

The 60 minutes regular match time have already been dramatic and great to watch, but this overtime became memorable. After just 23 seconds, Ylinen ran towrds Novikovs in the fast break, but a Bonn defender blocked him from behind. The great referres Julian Jung and Sascha Richter had to cross their arms above their head and call the penalty shot. Krystof Manour went for this attempt, but could not pass the goalie, so that the overtime went on. this was so crucial, as just thirty seconds later, Weißkirchen was sent into a fast attack by Stein and converted this opportunity. Bonn won by Sudden Death 5-4.
