In my (due to health issues, only) album review on Friday 21st November 2025 album review, I am focusing on my home region. The Rheinland band Souls of Sorrow released their debut album King in the Past on that day. Here is my review.

Souls of Sorrow – About The Artists

Souls of Sorrow are a German gothic rock band. They have been founded in 2022 in Much near Bonn. The band members are Fabian Rohlender (drums), Daniel Harpke (vocals, guitar), Sebastian Skorek (bass, guitar), and Terence Droste (guitar). Their debut EP has been Wild Blood, released in 2024.

Souls of Sorrow – King In The Past – Track by Track

The nine track album lasts 38 minutes.

1. Sometimes

The Germans kick it off slowly. Not only that Sometimes is not the fastest track of King in the Past, the song is also the shortest on the album. Nonetheless, the 3:10 minute listen is much more than a listen. The second part also gives a glimpse that Souls of Sorrow are somewhere in between of gothic rock and gothic metal.

2. Renegades

We are the are the outlaws, we are the runaways, we are the searchers, we are the renegades. With these lyrics, the second track is kicking off. The song is dark, a bit of grim and comes with an intense atmosphere. Especially the guitar and keyboard parts stay in your mind. On top of all that, there are Daniel’s vocals – which even boost the style of the song. Again, the harder riffs are rather in the second half of the song.

3. King in the Past

The title track of the album is next. King in the Past introduces itself with a keyboard intro, before the other instruments are joining. The groovy chorus adds a lot to the overall listen of this majestic song.

4. End of Me

Until we meet at the end of me is the key phrase of the fourth song’s chorus. The rhythmic, rocking song is a very present part of the album and feels even darker than it’s predecessor. The bridge comes with hammering riffs and howling guitars. This overall leads to a slight touch of alternative rock as well.

5. Death is Me

After a few gentle strums, the guitars take control of Death is Me. In general, the instrumental parts drive this rather epic song, which is lasting 4:35 minutes. I really love the plot of it.

6. Reborn

Unfortunately, the press kit to the album does not state, who is the female singer supporting in Reborn. Her melodic part, which is a nice addition to the Souls of Sorrow lead singer, turns the chorus into a duet style listen. Thus, the song is definitely a special one in this set of nine tracks.

7. Hour of the Ghosts

The only King in the Past song which has been released before the album is Hour of the Ghosts. Again, the band is working with backing vocals in this track, which leads to a wide width. Furthermore, the song is one of the fastest ones in here – and definitely one of the best listens of the album.

8. Kings of Darkness

Before we head to the final songs, the German band introduces us to the Kings of Darkness. The Hail to the Kings shouts turn this one to an ideal track for live appearances. Overall, the song feels fascinating, also because the bridge is giving it a nice twist. A very good one.

9. Song of the World

If you write a Song of the World, you likely cannot do a two minutes shortie. Maybe this is why Souls of Sorrow close their debut with this seven minute epic. It starts with a fine melody and ocean waves in the background, before the song slowly marches on. While the beginning of the song is really calm and slow at the beginning, it gains speed and energy later. The song comes with some breaks and new styles during the listen so that it is really lovely, hymnic chucker-out.

Souls of Sorrow – King In The Past – My View

Take my soul away, Souls of Sorrow state repeatedly in the last song of King in the Past. Their debut album is maybe not made to blow your mind. But it is a really good one. The band has defined their style very well and also manages to leverage between more quiet and more rocking parts. I really like it.
