  • Nice, small museum
  • Some really entertaining exhibits
  • Rather unique place

The Prater is one of the key touristic areas of Vienna. I already took you to several places located within the entertainment and recreational area, which has the character of an amusement park. Especially the 1873 World Expo changed the character of this large park. Since some adoptions to the flow of the Danube in 1875 lead to the situation that the park is nowadays located on an in-fact island. The Pratermuseum (“Prater Museum”) tells the story of this area and thereby majorly focuses on its story as an entertainment place. Here is my review of the museum, which is part of the Vienna City Museums (Wien Museum)

Prater Museum – Location & Admission

The Prater Museum is located quite close to the key entrance to the famous Vienna entertainment area. It is just a few steps away from the Wiener Riesenrad Ferris wheel and Madame Tussauds. There is also the starting point of the Prater Train in that area. The most straight-forward way getting there is by public transport. The Praterstern station serves underground trains as well as S-Bahn commuter rail and regional train connections. There are also – limited – parking capacities in the area.

The museum is opening from Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 18:00. Adult admission is 8 EUR at the time of writing. If you want to explore of the Vienna City Museums, the annual ticket for all 17 museums (29 EUR) might be an option. The Prater Museum also accepts the Vienna Pass.

Prater Museum – The Visit

The museum has moved to its new premises in 2024. It is majorly based on a private collection of local historian, who donated his collection in 1965. However, there are also some other exhibits including some of the Wien Museum. The museum is based on one major level and a gallery and his fully accessible. The documentation is in German and English, some signs also include braille. One wall features a large painting of the historic setting of the Prater entertainment area. The key exhibits, however, reflect historic items of the amusements and entertainment places in the park. This includes historic puppets, paintings, but also advertisements and stuffed animals reflecting the entertainment culture in Vienna in historic times.

The museum might feel quite compact at first sight, but it does make a good use of the space. There is even a Hall of Fame of famous people who influenced the story of the Prater. You also have a few videos and similar interactions.

Prater Museum – Services

The staff was okay during my visit. They felt a bit of angry here and there. There is also a small cinema, where you can learn about the Prater history in a documentary. A place you should not miss is the balcony of the museum – it offs a lovely view of the attractions around.

Prater Museum – My View

The Pratermuseum is not a must-visit. But you will be in the area anyway. Especially if you visit the Austrian capital using one of the touristic passes, you should give this place a visit. You can easily visit it in 30 to 40 minutes and you run into some interesting, sometimes even a bit of obscure exhibits.
