BV Borussia Dortmund – CSM Bucuresti 35-32 (13-20)

A day after I visited the close Northrhine-Westphalia battle in the 2nd Man Handball Bundesliga, Dormagen vs. Essen, it was time to travel to Dortmund for another handball match. In my first coverage of the EHF Champions League on 18th September 2026, BV Borussia Dortmund faced CSM Bucuresti (or Bucharest) from Romania.

The guests had a perfect start of the Champions League season, having won their first two matches in Group A of the group phase. The hosts faced a rather different experience, being beaten twice so far. A key reason to go for this match, which was played at Heinz Körnig Halle, right next to the Soccer Bundesliga team’s Signal Iduna Park, was in the guest’s lineup. They traveled to Germany with Pernille Brandenborg, one of the best players of the Faroese Women National Team. I was so happy to welcome her back to my home country.

BV Borussia Dortmund – CSM Bucuresti – Match Report

The match started like a nightmare for Borussia. CSM took control of the match and took the lead early. On the other side, the hosts acted nervous and also struggled with netminder Denisa Stefania Sandru. In the sixth minute, Bucharest already lead by three goals, majorly driven by three goals by Emma Cecilie Uhrskov Friis (1-4). Especially in the middle of the first half, the guests were absolutely dominant. After twenty minutes, they lead by six goals, 14-8.

Whenever Dortmund felt to come back into the match, the Romanians found the answer. Finally, the intermission buzzer must have felt like like a relief for the hosts, the score was 13-20 from their perspective

 

A Match which felt like two ones

Dortmund felt better at the beginning of the second half, but Bukarest stayed in control. They even scored the first two goals, both by Tatjana Brnovic, so that the gap between the teams after 32 minutes was nine goals. It felt like an early decider, the CSM fans had been much louder than the home crowd in the first period. However, almost suddenly, Bucharest completely lost their game. Between the 33rd and 47th minute, they just scored four goals. Too many offensive mistakes, no adjustment to the game and a strong Dortmund goalie were the key factors. Dortmund more and more played offense with seven field players, but even empty net goals did not happen. Neither of the three guest team goalies worked out any more.

Within 13 minutes, Dortmund tied the score (24-24) after having this nine goal handicap. The BVB was on fire, the spectators cheered and pushed their team.  Even though CSM was slightly stronger thereafter and also took more profit of some issues in the Dortmund defense, the hosts were on fire now. After a remarkable and memorable second half, they finally won by three goals, 35-32.

 

BV Borussia Dortmund – CSM Bucuresti – My View of the Match

Wow, that has been a shocking experience for CSM Bucuresti. For 32 minutes, there did not feel any other outcome of this match other than a devastating loss for Dortmund. However, the Dortmund coaches and team were superior in a skill, which CSM felt to lack completely on this Saturday: they adopted their match and did the right changes. CSM rather felt like a rabbit caught in the headlights to me. They need to learn from that match as soon as possible. Because of that, Dortmund absolutely deserved to win in this sensational and memorable comeback fight.
