I haven’t done a “Review Battle” for quite a while. Today, I am comparing two hotels of the same brand with each other. On the one hand, there is the IntercityHotel in my birth town Bonn. The brand is rather popular in Germany and I shared a couple of their outlets with you in here already. On the other hand, I will compare it to the IntercityHotel Dubai Jaddaf Waterfront, which is in a posh location in Dubai, having a pool and other services you wouldn’t expect in this brand of Deutsche Hospitality, which is also drivings hotels like Zleep or Steigenberger. After I shared my thoughts about the Dubai place this morning, let’s have a look into my birth town Bonn.

 

IntercityHotel Bonn – Location

The hotel is located right next to Bonn Main Station, on its West side. In fact, you can see the hotel from the platforms and some rooms have platform view as well. The station features an underground shopping mall (the Bonner Loch), which is – even after renovation a few years ago – definitely not the nicest spot in the former German capital. However, it features some basic restaurants and also a discount grocery store. As it is on station premises, it is allowed to open on Sundays as well. A staircase to that area is located right in front of the hotel. If you exit the main station area on the opposite side, you are already in the pedestrian and shopping district of Bonn.

The main station offers a nice variety of transport connections. There are local, regional and national trains departing from there. On the East side of the station, there is the main local bus station of Bonn. If you come by car, the IntercityHotel Bonn also drives an own parking garage. The nightly fee for that is 20 EUR.

 

IntercityHotel Bonn – Room

I had booked a Business Room at the IntercityHotel Bonn for one night, Sunday to Monday, in August 2024. I profited from a special sale, which gave me a rate, including breakfast, of 71.30 EUR. The room came iwith a nice size, comparing German standards. Not too large, but definitely suitable for a stay of a few days. The desk was large, there was a wide range of power outlets around the room. My room faced the street, you had little noise there.

The shower bathroom was actually nice and also had some space to store my toiletries. Like the whole room, this one was well-maintained and clear. Amenities were provided in dispensers.

 

Room Issues

However, I had initially been assigned to another room. When I entered the room, I saw that it was defintely not made. The bed looked weird and there were empty bottles as well as obviously used towels in the bathroom. Furthermore, there was an (unused) menstrual pad on the work desk. Weirdly, there was a welcome present, whcih I should receive as an H-Rewards Gold member. I claimed that at the reception and got the room you see above. I also made clear that I did not take the welcome present with me (a bottle of soda and some snack), because I was not sure whether it was meant for me. Even though the receptionist did understand that, I did not get a new one. This was very disturbing, as it is part of the rate (I could also opt for additional rewards points instead).

 

IntercityHotel Bonn – Breakfast

The breakfast in German IntercityHotels is definitely above what you would expect in hotel of that price range. There is a nice range of breads, juices and healthy items. The brand is typically weak, but sufficient in warm dishes – the place in Bonn is not exception to that. The breakfast room is really nice

 

IntercityHotel Bonn – Service

Apart from the negative part of the issue handling, the reception desk at the IntercityHotel was really nice. Check-in and check-out worked out smoothly and friendly. The hotel does not drive a gym or similar facility. WiFi in the room worked out very well.

 

IntercityHotel Bonn – My View

Bad luck that the IntercityHotel Bonn spoiled a good visit with the unnecessary issue about the unmaintained room and the missing welcome gift. This definitely decreases my rating. The location is excellent with many services around, the very close connection to rail and public transport is perfect. I really liked my stay there.

IntercityHotel Bonn vs. Dubai Jaddaf Waterfront – My Thoughts

Before my visit in Dubai, I was rather sure that the U.A.E. outlet would easily win this battle. The typical fantastic Dubai breakfasts, the rooftop pool and the nice area feel to be an easy win for the Middle East outlet. But even though the hotel in Germany did a really bad and avoidable mistake about my room, they cruised first over the finish line easily. Hospitality and processes were better in Germany, and they even easily beat the Middle East outlet in breakfast easily.

Finally, I would even judge the location to be better. The walk from the IntercityHotel Jaddaf Waterfront to the Dubai Metro is not too long, but it may be bothering in typical Dubai climate. Bonn has no issues in that. Not just in regards of the rating, they were the better Deutsche Hospitality stay for me.
