It happens very rarely that I share an album preview with you on a Saturday. My athletics coverage this week and an unusual release date force me to do so this time. On 24th June 2024, The Mourning release their new album Hush. Here is my reivew.

The album release has been moved to 10th July 2024.

The Mourning – About The Artists

The Mourning are a progressive rock band founded in 2017. The are from Tampa in Florida, USA. The sextet nowadays consists of the two vocalists, Johnny Ray and Eliana Blanchard, guitarists Francesco Pinter and Phillip Colacecchi, drummer Jason Berlin and drummer and producer Alex Nasia. In 2018, they already released the seven track album Theosis. However, there was not additional (single or album) release until this year, until they released singles from Hush in 2024.

The Mourning – Hush – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 52 minutes.

1. Chaos Machine

Hush opens with the hymnic mid-tempo track Chaos Machine, which has already been released as a single. Even though Johnny Ray takes the vocal lead, the dual singer concept works out well in this groovy track. The atmospheric bridge underlines the progressive rock attitude of the band.

2. The Mountain

With The Mountain, The Mourning presents a much finer sound, which has a certain folk rock touch at its beginning. The 5:38 minute song is thereby almost metaphoric on the instrumental side. Later, the song also more and more unveils its rock heart and the song feels very virtuous.

3. He Cries

The next previously released song on the album is He Cries. Again, the Floridians present a very theatric and dynamic tracks, which profits from the versatil setup of the band. Great work on the guitar side.

4. I Feel The Rain

I Feel The Rain is a slower track.. This time, Eilana Blanchard is also very present on the vocal side. The song also works with some sound elements. The guitar is driving the main theme in this five minute song.

5. Hush

The title track of the first full-length release of The Mourning is quite in the middle of the album. The beginning of Hush has a bit of a dark and psychedelic touch. Overall, this intense style keeps on. Just when you feel the song is a bit of lengthy, the rock band is presenting some new elements and ideas. Nice.

6. The Wind

The Wind also comes with dark and very atmospheric elements. However, there are also some keyboard elements which drive this song. The most catching and impressing part of the sixth song is the melancholic sound of the two singers, though.

7. My Own Way

The first tunes of My Own Way remind of bells playing a melody. The slow song has a very dignified character. Also due to the somehow sluggish way the lyrics of the song are presented, the focus in here is definitely on the instruments again. Lovely ballad-alike listen.

8. Cries of the Mind

After a slower, melodic opener, Cries of the Mind comes with some dark riffs, but also a lovely chorus. Again, the mood of the track is impressing. The song feels to suck the listener in with its intense atmosphere and the contrast of rocking and fine elements.

9. My Own Hell

The ninth song My Own Hell is again presenting a very dramatic, versatile listen which is taking you through different episodes of the story. However, I have to say that this one does not catch me as much as other songs. The female vocalist parts are lovely, though.

10. Smooth Seas

Save the best for last? At least, the closing song Smooth Seas is the longest track of the album, lasting over seven minutes. There is a lot of time to present different themes, styles, different kinds of atmosphere. There are even some church choir-alike elements with nice piano lines. A very stunning song at the end.

I will add the Spotify widget once the album has been published.

The Mourning – Hush – My View

Hush is definitely not an album to listen to while driving a car or while you are doing your crossword puzzle. It deserves to be listened to actively, explore all the different moods and which makes you follow the plot and story of the songs. The Mourning share a set of intense listens with their fans. Unfortunately, here and there, it is a bit of a challenge to follow that demand. Nonetheless, it is a very nice listen.

Favorite Song: Smooth Seas
