While covering the German Athletics Nationals 2023 in Kassel, I was looking for an accommodation near the hosting venue Auestadion. I finally went for two nights in an Accor Group hotel, the ibis Kassel. Especially as there were heavy traffic restrictions around the city at the time of the competition, this felt to be a wise choice. Here are my detailed thoughts about the hotel.
ibis Kassel – Location
The ibis hotel is located rather on the East side of the city, in a commercial district close to the A49 and A7 motorway. There are only a few dining options. A nice one, as it is having 24 hour service is a major road stop at the A7 motorway. This area also hosts a fast food restaurant. The opposite side of the A49 motors hosts an ibis budget hotel, by the way.
You need to have a car to get to the ibis hotel. The parking lot looks rather small, but the hotel itself is not that huge as well, so that this felt like a good fit. Parking is charged with 5 EUR per night, though. You might also find free of charge spots in the area around.
ibis Kassel – Room
I had two nights in July 2023 in an ibis standard room. The flexible rate was 202.30 EUR for both nights, including the discount due to my ibis Business Card. While the design of the room was a typical ibis one, the size felt comparably nice. I had no issues to store my technical equipment and clothing in the room. Unfortunately, there were just two power outlets next to the window, so that I felt lucky to have additional technical equipment with me for that cause.
The bathroom was the typical ibis design. It is functional and rather convenient. The towels were widely spread through the room (e.g. in the drawer). The whole room was well maintained and was really quiet.
ibis Kassel – Breakfast & Food
The breakfast performance was fine. The nominal price is 14 EUR the range of dishes is just fine in that regard. However, the buffet area is a bit of narrow. Thus, if the hotel is fully booked (as it has been during the sports event obviously, there are queues. Especially grabbing a coffee from the only coffee machine took some people five to ten minutes, which is not acceptable, of course. A second coffee machine would help a lot, also in regards of technical redundancy. Apart from that, the presentation of the breakfast was nice, overall.
I also had dinner in the hotel. Unfortunately, I did not take pictures. Despite the hotel was fully booked due to the sports event, the hotel just offered pizza and soup when I tried to order something at 19:45 roughly. Thereby, the staff felt extremely lazy and several times refused to serve guests at the table, even though they did in other occasions. The pizza was a convenience product, but overall rather fine.
ibis Kassel – Service
WiFi at the ibis Kassel worked out very well. Therefor, I struggled with the check-in, which felt a bit of neutral and less welcoming. The same team worked on the second evening, including the dinner issues I mentioned above.
ibis Kassel – My View
ibis Kassel has is overall a nice hotel. Having no sensible public transport connection is unfortunate, but therefor, the hotel is having nice location if you travel by car. Unfortunately, the lack of a second coffee machine and the bold staff in the evening shift unfortunately spoil a solid impression.
