  • Limited recline options

Despite being a Flying Blue Platinum member since a while, all the business class flights I had with Air France-KLM so far have been somewhere between European destinations. The more, I was looking forward to my Christmas vacation in 2025, where I had the first opportunity to fly KLM in their intercontinental business class. The flight from Amsterdam (AMS) to Las Vegas (LAS) was served by an Boeing B787 Dreamliner. Here is my review.

KLM Boeing B787 Business Class – At the Airport

At the airport, flying KLM Intercontinental Business Class does not differ at all from the continental flight experience. Flying in their business class automatically gives you SkyPriority advantage, so that you can use the (presumably) faster check-in. At Dusseldorf Airport (DUS), where our trip started, you can also use the priority lane for the security check. However, there is no SkyPriority line for the passport control at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), neither when you emigrate from the Schengen area nor when you arrive back there. This can be a bit of bothering (not blaming KLM for that, rather the airport). Of course, your luggage is tagged and should arrive quicker at the luggage belt.

KLM Boeing B787 Business Class – Plane and Layout

KLM runs a total of 28 Boeing B787 Dreamliner planes. 13 of them are the smaller B787-9, while the remaining are B787-10 planes. They come with a a total capacity of 294/318 passengers in the KLM configuration. The business class cabin is a typical 1-2-1 one, which means that you have single seats at the windows and two adjacent ones in the middle. My wife and I had window seats, which was very comfortable. If you select your seat, you should bear in mind that the first row in the middle does not have overhead bins, which may be bothering.

KLM Boeing B787 Business Class – The Seat

The seat had some pros and cons to me. First of all, it feels very comfortable and offers quite a bit of privacy. However, you just cannot compare it to a suite style seat. Of course, the seat can be put to a lie-flat bed. However, the options to adopt your seating positions are limited. You cannot move the individual parts of the seat individually, e.g. putting the footrest a bit higher than in ordinary configuration. The foldable table can be moved forwards and backwards, which even gave a comfortable setting for eating and working, even under my body size. Overall, the controls are very limited and the position and the too sensitive function of the buttons may lead

The seat also comes with a small cabinet, which is rather handy and larger than expected. With a small mirror, it even features some surprising element. However, this is finally the only storage space directly available at your seat. There is no possibility to store a notebook next to you, for example. This is very bothering. I also did not like the position of the individual power outlet, which is in front of the outer armrest. The armrest pointing towards the aisle can be moved up and down.

KLM Boeing B787 Business Class – Service

I will share the exact meals and snacks in a Food I had Onboard post. However, the crew was overall very attentive. I loved that I had a very nice supply of drinks – which I appreciate on a long flight. There was a major meal after take-off, a smaller one before landing and a snack in the middle of the flight. There is WiFi in the Dreamliner. Flying Blue members do have free messaging (no pictures or similar), there are packages for an hour or the whole flights (whole flight Amsterdam to Las Vegas was 29 EUR). I did not check them out. There are some additional amenities in the bathrooms.

The amenity kit came in a folded, larger bag, which I generally like. Nothing too surprising in regards of the items provided. There is a lip balm and a face cream, though. The toothpaste are chewable tablets, which felt a bit too weird to me.

Inflight entertainment

I am not that much of an inflight entertainment user. I typically rather work or sleep on a plane. Nonetheless, I really loved what KLM is proving onboard. The major screen swings towards you by the press of a button. You can adjust the angle, which makes it very convenient. The system has a huge selection of music, TV shows and movies. I rarely saw such a well-curated list of country music onboard a European carrier, for example. The touchscreen has a good size. I also liked that they had quite detailed information about the key attractions in selected destinations. A nice feature of the screen is that you cannot only control the light at your seat, but even the dimming of the windows.

KLM Boeing B787 Business Class – My View

The Business Class in KLM’s Dreamliner is a very solid product. The crew was lovely during the flight. The seat has some weak spots, like the storage at the seat, the position of the power outlet and USB ports as well as the too limited and too sensitive seat adjustment functions.
