Flyctory.com Pros

  • Nice country pop listens
  • Good vocals

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Too monotonous
  • Too short for an "album"

Four years after their most recent album For You (and two years after its deluxe version For You 2), Parmalee are back in country music with a new studio “album” (I’d rather say: EP). On 4th April 2025, they released Fell in Love with a Cowgirl. Let’s see whether I share similar emotions when I listen to their new record.

Parmalee – About The Artists

Parmalee is a country music quartet, which has been found in 2021 already. The band’s name thereby relates to the city they come from, Parmale in North Carolina. They are indeed a family band. Lead singer Matt (also guitar) and drummer Scott Thomas are brothers, bassist Barry Know is their cousin. Only the guitarist Josh McSwain is not related to the other members, but a long-time friend.

Parmalee released their debut album Daylight in 2002. It took the band a while to grow. Their fifth album Feels Like Carolina was the first US chart placement, even making it to the tenth spot in the US Country Album Charts. With Carolina (2013), Just the Way (2019, with Blanco Brown) and Take My Name (2021), the band had three RIAA platinum singles.

Parmalee – Fell In Love with a Cowgirl – Track by Track

The seven track EP lasts 19 minutes. It is marketed as an album, though.

1. Feels Like Home

The album opens with this modern country song with a rhythmic pop attitude. Especially on the chorus side, this one is a really nice listen. I like the vocal part in here as well.

2. Day One

Day one when you walked in the room – that’s how the second song is beginning. The song is another country-pop track. The style of Day One has certain boy band touch, though. It is definitely on the very heartwaming side of country music.

3. God Knew Better

He put me and you together – thought I knew best but God knew better. If you expected some stronger religious references in the third son, you are damn wrong. Parmalee doe another love song. I more and more hope that the quartet does not sing about the same lady all the time. She is getting so much attention, so that you have to believe that she is amazing. I am jealous, even though I would love this song to have a stronger profile.

4. Cowgirl

Right in the center position of the EP, there is the title track. The phrase Fell In Love With A Cowgirl appears in the chorus. The present rhythm leads to a nice sway. The heat in your heart definitely does not fade with that listen.

5. Enough

Only Cowgirl and Feels Like Home have been released before the EP, so that this album has solely new tunes from now on. The guitars in the background are somehow promising, but the song does not go too much into a rocking direction. The storytelling fees relatable, the melodic side is the weak spot in here.

6. Beautiful

Okay, the title is already suggesting that Fell In Love with a Cowgirl does not deviate too much in regards of its subject. Three of the seven lines of the chorus state You’re just as beautiful as ever (or very similarly). Starting with the acoustic guitar, the song later develops a rather rocking chorus.

7. Miss Me When You’re Drinkin’

It’s only when you’re lonely
Say I wanna see ya
Scrollin’ through our pictures
Sippin’ on tequila
Tell me that you’re not drunk
That you really mean it
That you really love me
Yea but that’s the thing
You only miss me when you’re drinkin’

After six songs, we all somehow jealous on these four boys. At least one of them felt to have found a really amazing lady, at least based on the lyrics. However, there is an obvious downside. The record is closing with it. At least , this also means that Parmalee does not only sing about girls, but also about drungs.

Parmalee – Fell In Love with a Cowgirl – My View

My review might sound very negative. Nonetheless, Fell In Love with a Cowgirl is a somehow nice listen. The songs are just too similar, there is a monotony, which makes you forget the songs too quickly after the listen. Bad luck, the guys indeed come with a lot potential. Flagging these less than twenty minutes as an album is ridiculous (at least the price in Germany is aligned to the flag), though.

Favorite Song: Day One
