During my last visit to Luxembourg, my wife and I visited the Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden – or Jardin des Papillons, how the park is also named. Here is my review of the place.
Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden – Location & Admission
The butterfly garden is located on the Northwest edge of Grevenmacher. The easiest way to get there is by car. There sis a major parking lot next to the attraction. However, several buses at least take you to the city center, from where it is a reasonable walk to the attraction. Depending on where you are. If you are located in Germany, you may also take the train to Weißen (regional trains to Trier, Cochem and other destinations) and cross the border via a bridge over the Mosel. This is a some 20 minute walk.
The park is opening from late March / early April to end of October. Daily opening times are 9:00 to 17:00. The tickets are time slot tickets for one hour, starting at the full hour. Thus, you should plan a bit ahead and ideally book the time slot online, especially during weekends, school holidays and other more frequented times. Adult admission is 11 Euro.
Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden – The Visit
The park is majorly one major hall. The signs are in French, German and English, but surprisingly not in Luxembourgian. The setting with two ponds is really nice. There are also a lot of different trees and plants. The key attractions are the butterflies, though, of course. It is really fun to explore them, walk around or just relax. You strictly need to leave after the hour for the next time slot’s visitors.
As you see in the pictures, you get quite close to the animals. There are several feeding stations and also breeding boxes, which are quite fascinating as well. Of course, you have to stay on the paths through the hall. Children need to stay at their parents to prevent damage to the animals. Apart from butterflies, there are also some other animals like frogs, turtles, reptiles and some birds. Some of them are held in separate enclosures.
Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden – Services
The reception area of the Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden also hosts a comparably large souvenir store. Additionally, there is a small cafe, which was very popular during our visit.
Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden – My View
The Grevenmacher Butterfly Garden is not overwhelmingly large. However, it is a really nice and well-driven place. They have a nice variety of species and some other interesting animals. Thus, it is definitely a nice place if you are a butterfly buff or have a trip with your kids.
