Flyctory.com Pros

  • Great guitar-pop album
  • Lovely lyrics and storytelling

I really love Eggs Benedict. It is one of my favorite posh ways of having breakfast. How could I neglect an album named Egg Benedict then. Especially if it is one of the indie guitar pop band Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen. The album released on 9th May 2025 is the second one I feature on Flyctory.com, after their 2021 one, GschichterIn aus dem Park Cafe.

Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen – About The Artists

Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen (“The League of ordinary gentlemen”) were founded in 2012, after the band Superpunk had broken up. Singer and guitarist Carsten Friedrichs and bassist Tim Jürgens are the only remaining members of that band who is also part of the follow-up project. The other members Gunther Buskies (keyboard), Fabio Papais (guitar) and drummer Heiko Franz. The band has released six studio albums so far. GschichterIn aus dem Park has been the last release of the pop quintet based in Hamburg and Berlin.

Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen – Egg Benedict – Track by Track

The eleven song album lasts 32 minutes.

1. Es ist immer Sommer irgendwo

The album starts with a typical DLDGG (how the band is typically abbreviated) song. Es ist immer Sommer irgendwo (“There is always a place where there is summer”) comes with a happy-sounding melody and a very present beat. The lyrics have a nice ease. A really enjoyable starter into this twelve track record.

2. Song für die ALU

Despite the easy sound of their song, the song does go for social-critic topics as well. Song für die ALU feels like a promotion track for a fictive party, when they state Kollege auch Du komm zur ALU (“Colleague, also come to the ALU”). A nice way to think about politics – with a deeper background.

3. Picknick auf Schloss Mühlenhof

In the third song, the German band is praising the cartoon The Adventures of Tintin (Tim und Struppi in German). They take you on a “Picnic at Castle Mühlenhof”, the latter is a key location in the comic. A song which works with a nice instrumentation, including brass sounds, and is really fun to listen.

4. Ein Dienstag in Dur (Es ist Frühling)

The song starts with Es ist Frühling und die Sonne scheint zum Fenster rein (“It is spring and the sun is shining through the window”). However, there are not just positive aspects in this musical road movie. Again, the happy vibes of the song are leading to the striking and enjoyable listen.

5. Sonniges Süd Schwabing

The guitar pop sound of the band leans towards a fast surf pop track at Sonniges Süd Schwabing. There are some spoken lyrics, but the song is overall practically instrumental. Nonetheless, it spreads nice vibes and leaves a mark.

6. Wenn du ein Problem hast

The sixth song of the album comes with a stronger presence of the guitars. Nonetheless, it nicely fits into the context. Wenn Du ein Problem hast, scheiß drauf – “If you have Problem, fuck it!”. Advice from Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen are straight and simple.

7. Ich geh lieber allein

The title of the seventh track translates to “I rather walk alone”. The song is about following your own, individual style. It is one of the songs on Egg Benedict which comes with the highest potential to sing along with the band during an upcoming show.

8. Ist Gunther da?

Organ sounds and a strong bass groove open Ist Gunther da?. This leads to reggae-alike feelings. The song describes typical city life scene in the Hamburg borough Altona while trying to visit a friend (“Is Gunther there?”). There are a lot of summer vibes in this one.

9. Paare vorm Kino

Fine whistling open this song about “Couples in front of the odeon”. Again, it is a lovely description of a scenery in front and inside the movie theater. Thereby, Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen work with beautiful storytelling in their characteristic style.

10. Hedy Lamarrs siebter Mann

Especially on the lyrics side, you see that there is a strong boundary between DLDGG and Andreas Dorau, one of my favorite pop artists. In this song, translating to “Hedy Lamarrs’ seventh man”, it becomes more obvious. Not only that Dorau is in the credits of the song, he is also singing with the band in this song. A great praise of the artist and inventor, who was born in 1914 in Vienna – this track could have also been on Andreas’ latest album Wien.

Hedy Lamarr, sie war ein Genie
Sie sah so gut aus
Ach, wär ich fünf Minuten wie sie

(“Hedy Lamarr, she was a genius
She looked that good
Oh, if I were five minutes like her”)

11. Chez Delmonico’s

The album closes with the 1:42 minute long outro track. Again, Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen go for an instrumental track, which feels like a lovely fade-out of the release.

Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen – Egg Benedict – My View

Of course, Die Liga der gewöhnlichen Gentlemen has there very own, rather unique style. I really like it. And, in regards of their 2025 album, I absolutely love it. It is a lingual masterclass combined with the lovely easy of their guitar pop style. An absolutely well done listen in my point of view.

Favorite Song: Hedy Lamarrs siebter Mann
