Visiting the Vienna Prater, I just could not stand and had a look into Madame Tussauds Vienna. The wax museum empire operates its outlet in the Vienna fairground-alike entertainment district since 2011. Here is my view about the visit.
Madame Tussauds Vienna – Location & Admission
Madame Tussauds Vienna is located right at the main gate of the Prater at the Riesenradplatz (“Ferris Wheel Square”). It is just a short walk away from the Praterstern station, which is very well served by underground rail (lines U1 and U2) as well as numerous local and regional train services, including the S-Bahn commuter rail. There are also a couple of parking opportunities in the area, but I would definitely recommend to visit the Prater with all its attractions by public transport The famous traditional Wiener Riesenrad (traditional Ferris Wheel) is across the square. All other Prater services and attractions are in walking distance. The Praterzug (“Prater Train”) has its main stop right in front of the building as well.
The walk-in rate for Madame Tussauds Vienna is 26.50 EUR. As typical in this franchise, you get a cheaper rate for pre-booking your ticket online. I visited the wax museum with the Vienna Pass, which included the full admission. Typical opening times in summer are 10:00 to 20:00, while in the winter months, the doors close already at 18:00. Last admission is one hour before closing.
Madame Tussauds Vienna – The Visit
Madame Tussauds Vienna follows a typical design of that brand. You follow a guided route along different sections of the museum. Documentation is in German and English. It is a bit of unusual that you run into Marie Tussauds right at the beginning of the exhibition, typically you do so at a later stage. What I really liked about Madame Tussauds Vienna is that there is a strong domestic flavoring. Austrian emperors (including Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary, typically named Sissi). But also in later stages of your walk through the exhibits, you run into several Austrian celebrities, like Arnold Schwarzenegger or several sports idols.
If you visited other outlets of the wax museum empire before, you will of course run into some very familiar faces again. The presentation is really good, even though it is rather traditional and not that modern and interactive like at Madame Tussauds Budapest, for example. I did struggle with the light here and there – other places of that Merlin Entertainment franchise definitely do better..I especially liked the section about winter sports and alpine party music. Finally, I also met Falco, whose wax figure was waiting for a photo opportunity in the gift shop.
Madame Tussauds Vienna – Services
Madame Tussauds Vienna drives the typical services. For example, you can get a wax model of your hand during your visit. The shop at the end of your visit is a bit of smaller and even more touristic than the ones in other locations of the Merlin Entertainment brand. Therefor, the store has a nice balcony, which is giving a nice look of the main entrance area of the Prater – a great spot to hang out.
Madame Tussauds Vienna – My View
Madame Tussauds Vienna is a good place. You will visit the Prater anyway when being in Vienna, the value for money is good. I like the domestic focus, even though there are a lot of international celebrities as well. Even when you have visited a couple of their places in other locations before, Madame Tussauds Vienna is definitely a nice way to distract yourself and to have some fun. The duration of my visit was approximately 45 minutes.
