On 20th April 2024, I headed to Switzerland. The Swiss Floorball Superfinals, held in Fribourg for the first time, required me to sleep in Switzerland before and after the event. The first match of the day on 21st April 2024 in the some 9,000 people holding BCF-Arena hosted the matches. Both teams swept their opponents in the semifinals, even though the individual matches were mostly close. The Kloten-Dietlikon Jets threby beat Skorpion Emmental-Zollbrück, while Zug United rolled over Piranha Chur. An interesting match-up was about to take place.

Kloten-Dietlikon Jets – Zug United – Match Report
In front of an amazing crowd of officially 8,473 spectators, the first minutes of the match were rather dominated by both teams trying to control the match. Shots on goal were rather rare, so that the first goal of the match was a bit of surprising. In the 8th minute, Martina Repkova took profit of a Corin Rüttimann assist and gave her team the lead. This lead to a more agile match, in which Zug felt to be just much more effective. Less than three minutes, Rüttimann herself scored the second goal of the season. Just moving the ball from her left to her right gave her a good scoring position – and Krista Nieminen had no chance.

The leading team after the regular season took more and more momentum. After 13 minutes, a fine free hit by Isabelle Gerig went right across the slot and gave Noemi Kistler a surprisingly easy tip-in. However, the Jets, who had won the last four championships, also had more chances now – and a flat show by Lea Suter at least closed the gap back to two goals (15th). The match was rather physical with both teams having nice opportunities. However, the score stayed at 1-3 until the first intermission.
The Jets Come Back In The Second Period
There were still 40 minutes left in the regular match time – and the reigning champion took control of the second period. After some five minutes of play in it, Lidia Ediz closed the score. As less than one minute later, Zug’s captain Weronika Noga got the first bench penalty of the match, routined Andrea Gämperli tied the score after just 15 seconds in power-play (27th). The match was tied now – but Zug did not struggle with their faith. When Ivana Supakova gave her team the lead once again in the 32nd minute, Nieminen did not even react on her nice move just a few meters in front of the goal cage.

The match turned out to be more and more dramatic. The crowd pushed the ladies. The Jets fan sector were the next ones to cheer for a goal. After the Zug defense lost the ball, the Kloten-Dietlikon Jets acted quick with some two minutes left in the second period. Finally, it was Marcia Wick, who completed a fine fast play by the nominal host. The score was tied again, at 4-4. A thrilling third period felt almost guaranteed when the teams went back into the locker rooms.
Ediz Putting Kloten-Dietlikon On The Winner Path? Ratajova says “No!”
You felt quite some respect by both teams about the match situation in the first minutes of the third period. The more, Ediz’s second goal of the match must have felt like a relief for the Jets. For the first time in the match, they were in the lea in the 46th minute. However, Denisa Ratajova reacted quickly after an Isabelle Gerig shot had been blocked right before in the 51st minute.

Both teams had their chances, but Leonie Wieland could have become the unlucky player of the match. With five minutes left on the match clock, she was sent to the sin bin for two minutes. However, even against a Zug United power-play formation of their very finest players, the Jets defense played a great box and could prevent another Zug lead. The thriller felt to turn in favor of the Jets, when the referees’ arm was up at 58:21 minutes. Supakova and her team mates protested against the penalty, but – of course- there was no way any more to prevent it. However, they did prevent a goal, so that they went into the ten minute sudden death overtime.
A Classy Overtime and a Dramatic Shoot-Out
If you expected a strategic play in overtime, trying to prevent a goal against your team, the BCF-Arena and the two team proofed you wrong. Both teams had their chances, especially at the beginning and at the end of these extra minutes. However, no team could push the ball over the goal line so that the men’s teams had to still wait for their warm-up – penalty shots.

The shoot-out started dramatically. In the very last scene of her career, Isabelle Gerig felt to have passed Nieminen already, but somehow felt to score. Such a great player – she just did not deserve this end of her career. As her team mate Ratajova failed in the second one as well and the Jets were more effective by Linn Larsson and Gämperli, there was huge pressure on Rüttimann in the third attempt. The experienced player went for the direct shot and succeeded. Zug United hopes came up, as Micheline Müller saved against Noomi Überschlag and Noga had the team’s second successful one. However, the next turn was up for Wick, who converted her penalty shot. Ronja Bichsel had to score to keep Zug in the business. However, Nieminen made her move far to the left side and Bichsel failed. Esther Jayabatasingam was the first one to reach the Finnish national goalie and start burying her in a pile of celebrating Kloten-Dietlikon Jets player.
Kloten-Dietlikon Jets – Zug United – My View of the Match
Wow – that was one of the best, most dramatic women floorball matches I have ever seen. Both teams would have deserved to win this one – and my heart was especially with the players, who had the last match of their career. The Kloten-Dietlikon Jets won the dramatic fight and thus went for the fifth Swiss Championship in a row. Finally, Zug could not profit more from the three goal lead momentum they gained in the first period – and felt mentally less stable in the crucial decider. The experienced Jets finally became the best team of the season in a memorable match in Fribourg.
