Sparkassen Indoor Meeting Dortmund 2024 (Indoor Athletics) – Track Events

After I gave you my report of the field and side events of the 2004 Sparkassen Indoor Meeting in Dortmund, the second part of my coverage is about the track events. Especially in indoor athletics meetings, where some of the throwing events are generally not practical / possible, you typically have a certain focus on the running events. There were some thrilling competitions on 20th January 2024, hope you enjoy my coverage.

This posting comes with 381 major size pictures in the sports gallery.

Sparkassen Indoor Meeting 2024 – Men Track Events

Here are the events for male competitors. They are listed in chronological order, as the finals occurred (e.g. the heats / semifinals pictures are merged with the finals). Rather short notice, the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting organizers added one event, the 800m Men.

400m Men

The 400 meters have been the most frequented distance of the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting. There was also a regional competition by host LG Olympia Dortmund’s athletes, won by Jenning Färber (50.54 sec). The main competition has been held in three staggered timed run, with the fastest time being the overall winner. Interestingly, the winners of the three individual heats also placed on the first three spots, namely Bosko Kiljanovic (Serbia, 46.99 sec), Ben Higgins (Great Britain, 47.57 sec) and Lukas Sutkus (Lithuania, 47.64 sec).

800m Men

The five racers four track round competition on the male side was a showcase for Robert Farken. The German athlete, starting for SC DHfK Leipzig won the competition in 1:47.00 min, which was equivalent to the World Lead and the meeting record.

60m Hurdles Men

The 60m hurdles were decided in to semifinals and a final heat. Yaquob Al-Yoha from Kuwait won the final in another world lead time (7.58 sec), followed by Dutch Job Geerds (7.63 sec) and Manuel Mordi (Hamburger SV, 7.70 sec).

60m Men

The 60m men sprint ended with a quite strange situation. Swedish Henrik Larsson crossed the finish line in the final first, but only ran under protest, as he had caused a false start in the first attempt. The somehow-lucky looser was Joshua Hartmann (ASV Cologne), who won the competition with a time of 6.59 sec.

1500m Men

The last track competition of the day was the long race for the male athletes. However, there had also been a B Final rather at the beginning of the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting. In that race, LG Brillux Münster’s Marco Sietmann rather easily won the race with a time of 3:50.09 min. The winning time of the final heat, though, was some ten seconds quicker, 3:40.18 min. TV Wattenscheid’s Marius Probst dominated the race and finally had a gap of some four seconds – he could even already cheer when he was running of the back straight of the final lap.

Sparkassen Indoor Meeting 2024 – Women Track Events

The women schedule on the running tracks was a bit shorter than the list of male events.

400m Women

The 400m Women competition featured two timed heats, with the best time being the winner of the event. I was really looking forward to that race, as it featured two Finnish athletes, Ella Räsänen and Milja Thureson. However, both did not get close to their personal bests. The victorious athlete was Italian Alice Mangione, whose 52.82 sec were quite much better than the second and third placed, Catia Azevedo (Portugal, 5318 sec) and Phil Healy (Ireland, 53.61 sec).

60m Women

On the first five ranks of the Women 60 meter final were three personal best and two season best times. The brightest smile of the afternoon on the women sprint track was the one by Polish Magdalena Stefanowicz. She just nipped over Wacker Burghausen’s Alexandra Burghardt by three thousands of a second in the photo finish (both 7.22 sec). With Portuguese Lorene Bazolo finishing third at 7.23 sec, beating Hungarian Boglarka Takacs by other hundredth of a second, this race was definitely a close and memorable battle.

1500m Women

Seven personal best times among the first eight competitors on the longest distance of the day – the ladies definitely had a fast time at 1,500 meters. Two British athletes dominated the competition, with Georgia Bell (4:03.54 min) beating Reeve Walcott-Nolan (4:03.93 min). Bell improved her indoor personal best by seven seconds. With Jetske van Kampen (4:09.58 min) and Marissa Damink (4:09.93 min), two Dutch athletes had a battle for the third and fourth spot on the final result sheet.

800m Women

The four lap event closed the women schedule on the indoor track. Three German athletes finished in the medal ranks. Jana Marie Becker (Königsteiner LV) was the quickest runner with 2:04.87 min. Tanja Spill (2:05.29 min, LAV Bayer Uerdingen/Dormagen) and Jennifer Hauke (2:05.77 min, Berlin Track Club) finished second and third.
